The thesis of this paper is that Bowen theory can be a valuable formational resource to pastors for growing in the ability to minister faithfully in the face of the intense anxiety manifesting in congregations. The seminar met one day each month for eight months. This paper offers a theological foundation for pastoral formation, an introduction to the essential elements of Bowen theory, and draws correlations between theology and the theory. The paper includes a description of the curriculum components and learning methodologies used in the seminar. A series of Lenten sermons addressed to a local congregation is the mechanism by which specific issues of codependency are juxtaposed with frequently mis-quoted biblical texts.  For example, does 'turn the other cheek' demand that an abused spouse is to stay in her marriage, regardless of beatings?  These and other similar concerns are addressed. The method employed to determine the effective use of the biblical basis for tissue techniques was a pastoral ministry with four separate married couples counseled in eight fifty-minute sessions of pastoral therapy. The study used a case history method involving four cases drawn from the author's work as a hospital chaplain and as a pastoral counselor.  The histories were preceded by a theoretical investigation of the condition of depression and of pastoral assessment and treatment concerns. Physiological and theological aspects of the processes of healing and wholeness were discussed. In addition nurses were polled concerning their opinions about the pastor's role in health care.  The surveys indicated that visiting, worship (prayer and sacraments) and counseling were the most important roles of the pastor in relation to a health crisis.  In a post test survey these activities were seen by the laity as a significant part of a person's treatment towards healing. Supervision/consultation is viewed as a continuum for training and sustaining ministering persons, its function being similar to pastoral care: healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling.  A definition, theology, and methodology are developed for pastoral supervision/consultation, and project materials and related resources used during the 1979-81 supervision/consultation with field education students and clergy in a pastoral counseling training program with the author form the appendix.
