Both clergy and laity are asked to explore the need for self-care and how Sabbath might be employed as a spiritual practice.  The implications for not observing Sabbath in one's life and ministry are noted experientially, through research and the use of a congregational teaching tool.  The author utilizes surveys, teaching objectives, and standard research to promote Sabbath as an instrument for fostering spiritual awareness and healing. In order for the church, specifically the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the author's context, to assist believers in slowing down and developing spiritual disciplines of listening, prayer, and discernment, church leaders must first model these deeper relationships, resisting the temptation to have church life reflect the busyness that seems to have become the norm rather than the exception.
