Chapter one explores the character and fate of small membership churches in the twenty-first century. Chapter two reviews the history of small membership United Methodist churches in Maine. Chapter three introduces the district conference project, defines holy conferencing, and details the three events in the Mid-Maine District where transformation tools were taught to small membership churches. A plan was developed and implemented through preaching and teaching and program implementation that sought to bolster the congregation's self-esteem. It uses the Pro-Active Research Method as an evaluative tool. John Wesley United Methodist Church is a small (100 member) church with an average age membership of 65. This plan was marginally successful. The pastor was moved before being able to fully realize the results of the plan.
