Three pastoral diagnostic variables - communion, repentance, and grace or gratefulness - of the seven pastoral diagnostic variables designated by Paul W Pruyser are found to be significant themes in the life stories of these recovering alcoholics and are used effectively as counseling parameters.  Four of these alcoholics in long-term sobriety are interviewed in oral and written sessions.  Two of them in short-term sobriety are seen in either short- or long-term counseling. The expression of this narrative quality in Christian worship is primary to the formation of Christian identity.  A study group assembled to investigate the narrative function in Christian faith and worship.  They developed a series of worship experiences based on a narrative understanding and evaluated them for increased awareness of Christian identity of the worshiper. The goal of the study was to find ways to assist patients with these life threatening diseases to move from places of anxiety and worry to places of peace, healing, and wholeness.  The researcher found that story was the common element in the interventions that were most effective fro these patients.
