An historical methodology was used for understanding The Gospel Association of India churches perspectives on discipleship. Focus groups and personal interview methodology were used to understand the perspectives on Christian discipleship among Christians in The Gospel Association of India.I explored the many themes that provided the basis of discipleship in the Old and New Testaments. God’s people in the Old Testament underwent discipleship with God as their teacher and Israel as the disciple through God’s covenant, God’s election, and encountering God collectively and individually. The New Testament provides an abundant basis for discipleship. We can become true disciples by following Jesus, being obedient to his teaching. With the aid of the Holy Spirit, we can be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ, which is the goal of discipleship.As the original disciples impacted their world by following their master, Christians in The Gospel Association of India can impact their world by living as true disciples of Jesus Christ. I loved creating spaces where I felt comfortable, safe, and able to invite friends to visit. As an adult, finding a true sense of home in this life through being transformed, renewed, and restored is my goal, and furthermore, to accept God’s invitation to participate in His Master Story of renewal and restoration in order to bring others home, too.The journey of transformation is to be understood as something sublime and beautiful, fulfilling Jesus’ words that He has “come that you might have life to the full” (John 10:10). However, this journey can be particularly bumpy for those of us whose sense of home has been broken.In this thesis I pursue answers to the questions: i) How do we find a true sense of home in this life? and ii) How do we continue to live when we are there? Then, through finding answers to these questions, I pursue the answer to my research question, iii) How do we create a sense of home from home for ourselves and for others in our Christian family/community/church?The journey of transformation, the solution to the problem of brokenness, may be bumpy yet it is worth it, because it is our journey home. Home is where we are comfortable, safe, and able to invite friends and family to visit. We cannot journey alone, nor are we expected to do so. Coupled with ecclesial ambivalence, Legacy Church seeks to address believers who can be salt and light in a struggling landscape. The Great Commission is Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples as the invitation to seek out the world and make disciples.This project focuses on how marketplace leaders of Legacy Church understand their role in fulfilling the Great Commission. Legacy Church is a marketplace church committed to impacting our geographical area by engaging in missional and incarnational living outside the construct of church activities.This is an ethnographic study exploring how marketplace leaders view themselves as disciples and how they participate in the Great Commission due to their adoption into the Kingdom of God. The exploration of the data reveals a deep sense of belonging in Christ that shapes the way marketplace leaders live and engage in church activities and also reveals a gap in their comfortability to engage in faith-based conversations at home, in the neighborhood, or at work.This gap compels Legacy Church to add to its Growth Track and produce a learning engagement that will equip marketplace leaders to have curious and courageous conversations about their faith outside the church. Life Groups are a core activity for developing authentic relationships; the study reveals the impact of these groups. Intersecting multi-disciplinary sources of theology, psychology, and neuroscience. The work proposes, tests, and records observations in developing a practice to lead people into transformation through relationship with God and within their faith community.I find that the process of transformation is a holistic process of cultivating mind, heart, and body, which form a holistic faith. The Trinitarian doctrine of perichoresis helps us see the potential of transformation with loving community. I also discover the enemy of such transformation is shame. I define shame and its effects of disconnection with God and community. A workshop was developed to engage leaders within a context of community with these findings. The results in the form of pastoral encounters are recorded.The work provides leaders with theology, practices, and case studies to facilitate spiritual transformation with a focus on engaging individual’s heart and story. Working with a diaspora urban faith community, I wonder if its application would benefit other contexts of culture, church, or ministry.Overall, the work has helped me discover how to disrupt the effects of shame and lead others into healthier relationship with God and with their community of faith. What principles  should  direct  him  in  making  use  of  this  day  according to  the  will  of  God?  This  problem  has  become  increasingly  perplexing  in  our  nation  today.  It  is  a  problem  which  is  especially acute  for  many  people  in  the  Reformed  Church  in  America.  Many  of these  people  came  from  a  background  of  strict  Sunday  observance. Is  this  observance  primarily  cultural  or  is  it  biblical?  If  it is  a  combination  of  the  two,  on  what  basis  can  one  untangle  these strands? This  problem  is  especially  critical  because  today,  as  never before,  the  Reformed  Church  in  America  is  reaching  out  into  the typical  American  community  with  an  evangelistic  approach.  As  she does  so,  she  must  not  lose  her  rich  heritage;  rather  she  must share  it.  On  the  other  hand,  she  ought  not  to  impose  upon  others any  part  of  that  heritage  which  is  culturally  conditioned  rather than  essentially  Christian.  Even  those  aspects  of  that  culture which  are  commendable  ought  not  to  be  made  requirements  for membership  in  the  Church  of  Jesus  Christ.In  dealing  with  Americans  of  many  different  cultural  and religious  backgrounds,  one  finds  no  greater  variety  of  viewpoint than  that  toward  the  proper  use  of  the  Lord' s  Day,  for  America itself  is  undergoing  a  great  change  in  its  attitudes  toward  the use  of  Sunday.  In  a  few  generations,  this  day  has  been  changed from  one  largely  used  for  rest  and  worship  to  one  used  largely for  work  and  leasure.  The  Puritan  Sabbath,  which  had  a  large influence  in  earlier  American  history,  has  given  way  to  a  far different  viewpoint. Covid-19, global migration, urbanization, secularization, postmodernism, plus social and political uncertainty require relevant and contextual discipleship. This academic exercise uses the participant observation method as a tool to examine current discipleship realities through analyzing scholarly work on the topic and by exploring four discipleship practices in four pastoral networks. This thesis argues that relevant discipleship requires the presence of five characteristics: intimacy, purpose, value, security, and vulnerability.Chapter one explores the problem of irrelevant discipleship and defines discipleship as a relational process instead of as a program or method to be used in churches and denominations. Discipleship is defined as enjoying God’s quality of life beyond doctrinal knowledge as individuals growth in Christ’s character and engage in making disciples. Chapter two explores the biblical framework of discipleship by identifying discipleship in the Old and New Testaments. It also looks at historical expressions of discipleship and theological discipleship models through history. Chapter three reviews discipleship literature, focusing on the work of nine authors across different contexts. Chapter four describes how the participant observant method is applied in this academic exercise among selected literature consulted and pastoral networks observed. Chosen literature fitted the twofold criteria used to select authors: scholarly authors who are pastors and who are involved in discipleship networks. The Context is described by means of a summary of selected aspects of the research done by the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries and the Search institute. The contents were used in the adult education program of the Surprise Valley Parish, United Church of Christ, in rural, northeastern California.The introduction is intended as an invitation, to pull the reader into considering a comprehensive view of their faith. The Conclusion provides the reader with a summary along with a sense of commission that suggests directions for further exploration and implementation.The four Chapters describe standing in grace with ourselves, others, the world, and God. The approach begins with the reflexive relatlonship and moves continuously outward until it culminates with one's ultimate relationship. Throughout, God's grace in Jesus of Nazareth is the point of reference for understanding the nature of these relationships. This is done with a view toward describing how a maturing Christian faith might manifest itself in these relationships in the ever-changing temporal context. The concept of ' covenant' became a vehicle for testing the potential for meeting such a need. Research in various disciplines — biblical, historical and sociological — broadened the understanding of the term and provided the basis for the doctor in ministry project.Using the research and participatory methodologies in the project, I took a sample group through a real life experiment with covenant-renewing. We aren’t just defined by what we eat but who we eat with, where we eat, and how we eat. All of it says something about us. Food is cultural as well as biological—it’s spiritual as well as physical. Food is a ritual, communal, and relational act. All living things are part of what we call the food chain: all things are eating or being eaten. For Christians, the Table of the Lord, the Eucharist, should be the height of our eating. It is the apex of our interaction with food. At the Table, we enter the mystery of provision as we are fed by our good and gracious Father.However, many of us have lost this connection of table to Table. The Western diet has stolen our diverse and bountiful diet and replaced it with the tepid slop of a fast food nation. Our theology of the Eucharist as been boiled down to individual memorialism of Jesus’ death, instead of a robust and hearty theology of remembrance, communion and hope.So how might we go about reconnecting table to Table? I started with scripture where the Apostle Paul reminds the Church about its identity at the Table and how every table that we gather around forms us. Then I followed this thread through the theology of John Calvin to discover this connection within the Reformed tradition. Additionally, I use the voice of Jean-Jaques von Allmen to demonstrate how every meal that we eat is the prelude to and an echo of the meal that we eat at the Table of our Lord.
