This project will demonstrate how using a framework of strategies that has been developed and utilized by the educational system can be adapted to the worship setting creating an environment that has a significant impact on people who struggle with cognitive process issues and disorders. A survey was created and sent to all of the churches within the Lancaster Association of the United Church of Christ to see if these churches had developed a practice of radical hospitality for people with CPD and how they implement their practice. According to the results of this survey it was determined that these particular churches were struggling with the right strategies to develop their own practice of radical hospitality and as a result, people with CPD were not benefitting fully from what they were offering. Primary Purpose: That mildly to moderately retarded adults can show positive intellectual, emotional, and social growth in functioning in both individual and interpersonal relationships when participating in and completing the course of study. B. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group or retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. C. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group of retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. In the early 1960’s, the Pleasant Hill United Methodist in Owings Mills, Maryland, began a social ministry with a group of retarded male adults at a nearby state institution, The Rosewood Center for the mentally handicapped [sic]. The program originally centered on a once-a-month visit to the institution with games, an occasional film, fellowship, and refreshments. These cases demonstrate that such persons, regardless of impairment, can grow through experience of God's love in trustful interpersonal relationships.  The cases also show that, in spite of recent improvement, some persons continue to be neglected and abused in institutions. Historical research on infant communion is applied to the practice of communing persons who are profoundly mentally retarded.  From the applied research a sound theological rationale for administering communion to persons who are profoundly mentally retarded is developed. The research method used was to interview and survey several members of various local churches now participating in this ministry.  In addition, a section on theology and 'rational assent' were included in the report.
