In doing so, the ready will hopefully gain greater insight into how old ministry leadership paradigms have restricted a broader, more inclusive and baptismally faithful rendering of vocation, thereby opening up the possibility of engaging in new paradigms of church leadership. What, indeed, is God doing with us, day by day, and year by year? And how can we more fully cooperate? These questions are offered as a means of introduction to a study which at its core is lifting up the stories of clergy. The passion the co-researchers bring to their ministries, and their growth in love of self, others and God across the twists and turns of their spiritual journeys, is inspiring, and has much for the reader to consider and reflect upon for one’s own life. Chapter 2 and 3 explore the conceptual framework surrounding this study. Attention is given to both theological and theoretical ways of thinking about what can be learned from the clergypersons’ stories. Chapter 4 outlines the core procedures used in phenomenological analysis and gives specific information regarding such matters as recruitment of co-researchers, documentation provided and the structure of the interview process. In Chapter 5 the co-researchers are introduced and resultant themes and structures of the experience of spiritual journey are discussed. Examples from the co-researcher’s stories are provided. In Chapter 6 a summary of the research findings is provided, and hypotheses are reviewed. Since that time I have been personally involved on two occasions in the placement process of the United Church of Christ. After my initial entry, I have made one other move within my adopted denomination. The second placement was accomplished while this doctoral project was in progress. I perceive inadequacies in the placement process of the United Church of Christ, differing in nature from the deficiencies of the United Methodist process. No placement system devised by the mind of man can work perfectly. But my personal experience in two dissimilar systems aids in analyzing the merits of placement practices of the United Church of Christ. Two major studies of placement in the United Church of Christ have been conducted by the Research Center in Religion and Society, located at Lancaster Theological Seminary. The first study, “Placement and Deployment of Professionals in the United Church of Christ,” was conducted in 1973. The second study, “Pastoral Search Committees,” was conducted in 1975. These studies identify problems in the placement process in the United Church of Christ that match my own experience. This project is an attempt to deal with the problems identified in those earlier projects. The study on search committees suggests that probably the most serious omission committees make is in not adequately preparing for their tasks (e.g. preparing statements of needs and goals, conducting studies of the congregations, deciding the qualifications they want the minister to have, preparing a job description) before interviewing a candidate. This study suggests that committees seeking a pastor seem unaware of the professional qualifications that they want their pastor to have, or how to describe qualifications adequately. Resistance to calling clergywomen to these ministries does not come from the older adults who would be served but rather from governing boards and institutional leaders who frequently lack education, experience, and principles of equality. Little support was found to relate receptivity to religious beliefs, motivation, or involvement, except for attendance patterns and for respondents who have women pastors. Effects of racism and sexism education differ significantly.
