The concern for service carries out the practices of the Society of Friends (Quakers).  The question studied was the effects of requiring community service.  Pre and post test measures were taken using instruments to measure self-esteem, social and personal responsibility.  Interview and group discussion were used to gather data.  The students in this study showed a significant increase in social and personal responsibility.  Self-esteem did not change significantly. The vehicle for the evaluation was a case method study used in peer group settings.  Assessment of change was primarily via use of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire as per a pre-test evaluation of levels regarding self-esteem. Subject categories used were: 1) intelligence; 2) ego-strength; 3) self-acceptance; and 4) social image concern.  For a public the size of the test groups, a mean change of 75 percent was deemed necessary to be significant. This change was achieved in regard to three of the four evaluation factors, and was slightly under forty-five percent on the fourth.
