Project"],"creator_tesim":["Ziegler, Earl K."],"subject_tesim":["Spouses of clergy","Divorce","Church work with divorced people"],"abstract_tesim":["The aim of this Doctor of Ministry project is to help the Church of the Brethren denomination identify the factors involved in the breakdown of marital relationships among the Church of the Brethren clergy. The purpose of the project is to gain insight into a serious problem the Church of the Brethren must address; namely separation and divorce among the clergy of a denomination which has always acclaimed strong family life. The basic focus of this project has been to discover what factors divorced clergy and spouses identified as contributory to their divorce. From this gathered data and the analysis of it, the church denomination at its national, district, and local levels may be able to deal with this problem more redemptively and creatively. Data will be presented and suggestions will be shared for the denomination to examine and evaluate. Designed to discover what factors divorced clergy and spouses identify as contributory to their divorces, this project was limited to those persons who were divorced within the past ten years. Focus was placed upon recent breakdowns because the results of the findings will be more relevant to contemporary society and to the changing attitudes within the church. While the interviews did include several persons with administrative jobs, the basic focus was on the parish pastor who lived in the parsonage among the people of the community where he served. Christian maturation is defined as growth toward having a Spirit-filled character as described in the New Testament.  A six month course was taught in six churches and involved thirty-four people.  Pre- and post-course psychological testing instruments were used as well as questionnaires at the end of the course.  The comparison of the testing instruments' data shows a significant growth toward Christian maturity as defined by the author. The format is a series of four small group dialogues held in a local United Methodist church.  Changes of attitudes are measured by an instrument administered at the beginning and at the end of the dialogue process. The research method used was to interview and survey several members of various local churches now participating in this ministry.  In addition, a section on theology and 'rational assent' were included in the report. Rewards were identified in three categories, i.e. Financial and Material, Status and Relationships and Spiritual.  The study method was in three parts.  The first was an analysis of ordinary and biblical usage of the word 'reward.'  the second was a questionnaire survey of all parish ministers in Baltimore Annual Conference.  The third was a series of three dialogue groups held among parish ministers in Baltimore Annual Conference. The data collected revealed that there is much going on in church and community directed toward ministry to the elderly but not enough concern being given to the ministry of the elderly.  This means a valuable resource of knowledge, wisdom, and energy is not being adequately used. The study not only collected data to support assumptions and project new learnings but designed and tested a process for helping individuals and churches do some planning directed toward involving elderly in ministry. The study proceeded on the hypothesis that there is  correlation between a congregation's practice of confirmation and the perceptions of youth regarding their identity and participation in that congregation.  The project identified two models of confirmation ministry on the basis of predominate characteristics within that ministry.  Eighth and ninth grade youth from six congregations equally representing the two models participated in the interviews. Although each church is unique in size and composition, as well as in the circumstances surrounding the pastor's departure, the common element of grief is present.  Personal interviews with church leaders elicited various expressions of sadness in the loss of their pastor.  With learnings related to grief resulting from death and separation, application is then made to the loss of a significant other, a pastor. Biblical and theological references are included.
