The purpose of this study is to address the issue of the pastor’s role as a participant in decisions affecting the funeral event. It is my intention and profound hope that this project will enable my pastoral colleagues and me to better minister to the bereaved at the occasion of a funeral by exercising more creative choices which might be available to us in such events. As the number of urban counseling centers increases, there is a need for trained, culturally sensitive pastoral psychotherapists to be able to treat competently low-income black American clients who will increasingly frequent these centers. To uncover these factors twenty-eight 'main-line' Protestant church members were interviewed, each having been a member of a rural or small town church at the time of divorce.  The interviews revealed specific factors that caused some divorcing people to leave the church and other factors that enabled some to remain active. Research included an examination of the wholistic concept, its biblical and theological bases, and its historical development.  Models of wholism are included in the project along with learning experiences of the participating pastors and physician. A content analysis process was applied to stressful event descriptions submitted by clergy. Based on factor analysis of the reported frequencies of occurrence and relative effects of events, a list of 44 events named the Pennsylvania Life Events Scale for Clergy, or PLESC, was composed. Effects of racism and sexism education differ significantly. Secular organizational and human relations theories such as group development, open systems, negotiation and management styles are adaptable and useful in parish leadership.  Each of four cases, researched according to the Case Method Institute, was taught and critiqued at least twice to test relevance and learning effectiveness.  The writing and test teaching of the cases and theory resources were effective in teaching the dynamics of parish conflict and demonstrated the significance and relevance of behavioral and ethical theories to the managerial task in parish conflict. The investigation was undertaken by means of an in-depth clinical case study of Roman Catholic women who had experienced the sense of being called to religious life. The mutual influence of spiritual and psychosocial growth was illustrated by means of the case material within the limits of the case study methodology.
