Instrumental to this goal would be to develop, design, implement, and evaluate this resource. The project began with the research and construction of a biblical-theological rationale and suggested means of self-care. Primary resources for this research included Holy Scripture and the writings of Paul Tournier, especially The Adventure of Living, The Strong and the Weak, and The Whole Person in a Broken World. The biblical-theological rationale and suggested means of self care form the content of Chapter 1. Chapter 2 contains the design of the Christian Education experience (a one-day retreat and follow-up meeting) and the design of the evaluation of the effectiveness of the retreat. Chapter 3 provides a description of the pilot-test retreat and follow-up meeting held in the spring of 1990 including the participants’ contributions. Chapter 4 contains data for evaluation of the retreat design and experience. Chapter 5 provides evaluation of the achievement of objectives, evaluation of the retreat design and conduct, evaluation of the evaluation design and instruments, and a revised design for the retreat and follow-up meeting. Correspondingly, do they rate the segments of sermons which were written to their inferior function as “speaking least specifically” to them? If the preliminary evidence suggests an affirmative answer to this question, then: (2) How successful can one preacher, who has one dominant function, be in crafting four different segments of the same sermon to speak to groups with each of the four dominant functions…Two converging arenas, that of a professional pastor, and that of an MBTI professional, intersect with this project…People who come to church are different in the ways they perceive and make judgments. As a result of this, communication becomes an issue. By making the basic assumption that the MBTI is an effective instrument in typing how people perceive and make judgments, it would seem also that communications can be designed to communicate to people more effectively by type. Not only is the intent to help persons understand the value of possessing this kind of faith, it is to provide specifics as to how to go about doing this. To that end, this pastoral-theological essay establishes a scriptural basis for lifting up the importance of possessing a childlike spirit within the context of a mature and growing faith. A congregational assessment tool and process have been designed to help persons identify areas in the life of their church where such a spirit is alive and well and where it is not. Project"],"creator_tesim":["Dencler, Claude L."],"subject_tesim":["United Church of Christ","Church history","Christian stewardship"],"abstract_tesim":["During the decade of the 1980s the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ (encompassing the counties of Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Lucerne, Columbia, Pike, Lackawanna, Wayne, Susquehanna, and Bradford, (in northern Pennsylvania) made available to its churches a financial stewardship program entitled, Breakthrough in the 80’s. The intent of that program was to help local churches obtain, from their members, more money for the ministry and mission of the Church. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Breakthrough in the 80’s Program. The first task will be to offer an overview of the development of stewardship as a key theological concept. Secondly will be presented a brief historical sketch of the UCC churches in the Conference, tracing their origin to the German people who first came to the shores of North America in the seventeenth century. Next will be offered a description of the program itself, including its original purposes, its evolution over the decade it was offered, and a listing of the resources used. The evaluation of the Breakthrough Program will be presented in an objective and subjective manner. The numbers and statistics will present the facts of the program’s effectiveness, while the insights gained from the subjective evaluation will offer learnings that often speak louder than mere figures. (See Appendix K) The study of ministry with the frail elderly represents my continuing concern about the specific and unique needs of this group of individuals. The study is a pastoral essay about serious societal problems regarding the care of the frail elderly and a plea for church congregations to assist in solving the problems. The Ministry with the Frail Elderly (FEM) Study reflects concerns that are both prophetic and priestly. The study prophesies that the problems of ministry with the frail elderly are systemic in nature and that the magnitude of the problems will continue to grow. Relevant literature and demographics are used to convey the particulars of the problem. Secondly, this study suggests strategies and models for congregations to use to identify, nurture, and assist frail elderly…The purpose of the FEM study design is to describe the circumstances of ministry with the frail elderly by demographic statistics, by medical and health literature, and by interviews with pastors, health care staff, and the frail elderly themselves. Geographic limits are established for interviews to York County, Pennsylvania, the location of this researcher’s parish. The goal of Part I is to describe the complexity of the needs of the frail elderly; and secondly, to suggest strategies for a shared ministry. Is it possible to live creatively within this tension? This is the question this project explores. The first chapter looks at this tension as it is experienced in a particular church by one pastor. Hopefully the reader will be able to identify with this experience in his or her own ministry setting. Next the project looks at three contemporary models of social ministry in a pastoral context. Chapter two offers the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rev. Dr. Paul Sherry, President of the United Church of Christ, and Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker, as these models. The third chapter offers a theological foundation to support ministry that balances the pastoral and social. Juergen Moltman is the primary reference for this theological exploration. The final chapter includes a variety of ways the creative tension of social and pastoral ministry can be lived out in the local church. The project concludes that social ministry can creatively stimulate pastoral ministry. Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Schenck, Richard L."],"subject_tesim":["Methodist Church","Mission of the church","Christian ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Approaching the subject of Christian Ethics by looking at 'life' as a comprehensive whole, this dissertation presented three criteria for a Christian ethic of life: (a) A whole life mission embraces life as a comprehensive whole. This holistic mission is an adequate ethic for local church outreach to the whole person in society. (b) A whole life ethic of the local church embodies the compassion of Christ. (c) A whole life ethic is consistent, as a local church engages itself in sanctity of life as well as quality of life issues.These criteria are the guiding principles of this project and are utilized in this assessment and development of an ethic of life for the local Wesleyan Church. This whole life ethic addresses issues along the whole spectrum of life from conception to death. That spectrum confronts such sanctity of life issues as abortion, capital punishment and modern warfare, as well as quality of life issues such as economic poverty and despair.This project calls for an introduction and integration of a 'consistent ethic-of-life mission' into the social outreach ministry of a local church. Integrating this mission into a local church means that the project was involved in an introductory attempt to insert a new social mission agenda into the present mission of that church. The strategy introduced an educational approach that would lead to the establishment of a social outreach ministry, through the use of a primer that was pilot-tested in three symposiums. This prominent diocese offers a unique base for the study of this significant position for women that has emerged in the Post-Vatican II Church. The project examines the well-being and morale of women pastoral associates, compares their progress from 1980-1991, and investigates their perception of the support they receive.The methodology comprises: personal background and historical leadership role of Maryland: a theological foundation for women in ministry from the perspective of systemic grieving and transformation; an overview of the development of the ministry in the Baltimore diocese; a twofold appraisal of pastoral associates comparing the 1980 Simmons' survey and an updated 1991 questionnaire with corollary assessments and interviews with bishops, pastors, parishioners, and diocesan personnel.The group surveyed were active members of the Pastoral Associates Association whose background, until recently, has been predominantly women religious. Survey results point toward changes in duties and responsibilities from earlier experiences of direct involvement in visiting parishioners to training parish ministers and more programmatic and pastoral leadership activities. Acceptance from parish and community groups have steadily increased while there have been varying degrees of support from bishops in the diocese. The work is viewed as satisfying and as an opportunity to use abilities creatively in a responsible position; yet, conversely, there is recognition of the position's flat career path. Although pastoral associates see their ministry from the perspective of Church as Servant, nevertheless, they desire equal partnership in ministry and a model of Church as Community of Disciples. This research explores how women in the Roman Catholic Church may be enabled to change their understanding and attitudes to claim a unique form of power within the Church's structure through education, discussion and small group interaction.The method followed in this research took the design of a seminar. The methodology used involved a series of seven two-hour seminar sessions. Each seminar included education on topics related to women's issues in the Church: Women's culture and Spiritual Origins, Scripture and Spirituality, Power, Patriarchy and Sexism and Family of Origin. The format of the sessions included input, discussion, sharing,journaling, experiential activity and ritual. Reading assignments were taken from updated materials written by women researchers, theologians and scripture scholars. Eleven women from the ages of 32 to 65 from a white suburban local Catholic Church participated in the project. Their marital status, education, theology background and family of origin varied. At the initial session, each participant filled out three formulated questionnaires related to (a) Women's status within the Church, (b) self-esteem and (c) feelings regarding power. All these questionnaires were re-administered at the end of the course to evaluate whether any major changes took place. The most powerful instrument for women in this study occurred in the more intimate form of a personal interview where the opportunity of an in-depth sixty to ninety minute conversation with each participant took place three months following the seminar's termination. These interviews focused on seven questions relative to the seminar's objectives: (1) To what extent did the participants exhibit a heightened awareness and enthusiasm? (2) How have the participants' views of empowerment been affected by the seminar? The report begins with an historical perspective of evangelization followed by a Catholic and Protestant perspective and the difference between these views. Glenmary's fifty-two years experience and contribution to evangelization are reviewed. Three case studies of rural missionology show the diverse approaches of Catholic evangelization in Appalachia. The Virginia study is a Base Christian Community model. The Kentucky study is a Parish Team model, and the Tennessee model demonstrates a Community Development approach. The last chapter covers general reflections on evangelization and some recommendations for new ministers coming to Appalachia. For over fifty years, the Glenmary Society has challenged its members to evangelize the rural Appalachian population of over twenty million people. At present, over one hundred professed Glenmary members minister to 1.25 million people in thirty-five base parishes and thirty-seven mission stations. Some outsiders look up to Glenmary as 'experts' in this ministry. They think we have the experience, knowledge, and success stories to teach others how to be successful missioners in Appalachia and the Deep South. But, the truth is that we are still groping for answers. The major findings were that Appalachia is a difficult place to do Catholic evangelization because of its unique cultural heritage, religious tradition, and depressing poverty. The area is highly unchurched. Glenmary mission parishes average about one-half of one percent (0.5%).
