For many, the commitment to study the ancient text persists in being an elusive pursuit. The hinderance can be described as biblical nescience. Although numerous Christians adhere to religious doctrine, church ordinances, and corporate engagements such as regular Sunday worship, Christian instruction, communion, Bible study, prayer, ministry service, and giving, largely excluded from the framework of faith is Bible reading. Some Christians acknowledge the major obstacle to be a lack of understanding of the storyline. Another challenge for readers is finding relevancy in the text, while others hold to the notion that comprehensive Bible reading and study are the sole responsibility of the pastor and church leaders to guide Christians beyond these complexities and aid future believers to embrace the Living Word. This writing seeks to reenergize and rekindle the importance of reading and having a deeper understanding of the Good News through the use of a biblical plot-line that places emphasis on God’s mission."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129527981703168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:17:08.193Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:27:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"80f9a03b-1470-402d-ac76-f3ee95a3a2a8","accessControl_ssim":["96b2bfc8-8818-4f4b-b077-0f02952f7f81"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Unbound On The Sabbath: Preaching About Sexual Abuse For Enlightenment Of Congregations And Hope For The Injured"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["89ca3186-18de-4582-8e04-185f8568f126"],"hasLease_ssim":["1059df23-1062-4002-8527-e1004241aa4b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Kay Northcutt D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gilson, Christine M."],"keyword_tesim":["Episcopalian Churches"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. Aquinas Institute of Theology, Saint Louis, Missouri, 2021. Sexual Abuse is neither new nor limited to the current century. Interest in the efficacy of preaching about sexual abuse to enlighten congregational listeners and to convey the healing message of the Gospel has evolved alongside church educational programs designed to prevent sexual abuse in churches. This thesis project helped a small group of preachers learn to preach about sexual abuse to their own congregations. It asks what the effects on listeners are when they hear such sermons and on preachers when they preach them. Chapter One provides background for preaching about sexual abuse, describes the reasons for the project, and discusses published resources that advocate for such preaching. The chapter concludes that such preaching is appropriate.Chapter Two integrates the scriptural, theological, and homiletical foundations of preaching. Both the healing texts of the Gospels, and some of the dark texts of sexual abuse and sexual violence are considered.Chapter Three considers sexual abuse in its the social and cultural environment. It helps preachers understand what is going on in the world outside the church so they can bridge from there to the world of the Gospel. It also describes ways in which churches and clergy have used scripture to harm victims of sexual abuse. Chapter Four describes the ministerial intervention by four preachers. It describes how the preachers were selected, how surveys for the preachers and their listeners were constructed and used, and the formation of congregation focus groups. Brief demographic data of the congregations involved and of the cities in which they were located was provided.Chapter Five describes the findings from the surveys, workshops, and focus groups, and interprets them in the context of the thesis project. It contains the author’s conclusions, observations of shortcomings in the research, and looks ahead to other possible research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130151903297536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:03.211Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:23:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"976d6eb8-2eee-4697-85cb-d420b175ea20","accessControl_ssim":["c7dc832a-482a-4ea8-bdd3-e63e4598d94e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Grace Leads to Joy: Spiritual Formation and the Examen"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:33:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d6448a7e-21fb-4ea8-bfaa-bfdfd7f1c953"],"hasLease_ssim":["5e871a90-10ba-4725-882a-2b562d687272"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Canada","Malawi","Netherlands"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Hoekstra, Edward Pierre"],"keyword_tesim":["Tests and measurements in religion","Practice (Theology)"],"subject_tesim":["Discipling (Christianity)","Commitment to the church","Kingdom of God","Beatitudes","Reformed Church","Bible. To achieve this goal, the project explored mainly two key topics: narrative analysis and a Christ-centered hermeneutic. Guided by the principles and tools of narrative analysis, preachers and Bible teachers are able to discern the main message of narratives as originally intended by the biblical author. Guided by the principles and tools of a Christ-centered hermeneutic, preachers and Bible teachers are able to connect the message of narratives to Christ authentically, without distorting or violating the original intent of the narrative. These considerations of narrative analysis and a Christ-centered hermeneutic culminated in a working three-step method for handling Old Testament narratives faithfully in preaching or teaching. The project implemented the proposed principles by developing a manual, the content of which was taught in a twelve-hour course to a group of preachers and Bible teachers. Pre-course competence was assessed and compared to post-course competence by means of a focus group, surveys, a course evaluation, and written work on assigned Old Testament narrative texts. The results showed a demonstrable increase in competence among participants. The principles and tools presented in the manual/course were shown to be valuable for helping preachers and Bible teachers to preach or teach from Old Testament narratives in a way that is both Christ-centered and faithful to the original intent of the narrative."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717176311021568,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:14:07.843Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:23:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:08:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"21c1ac5f-c885-4661-a014-181663ba560b","accessControl_ssim":["c94c4427-9e55-443c-859a-9838ac47baca"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Apostolic Women Religious in the United States and Their Legacy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:23:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:08:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5542e82b-5c13-4487-9f09-5aa5eb38333c"],"hasLease_ssim":["75fd75bb-3905-473d-8bd0-ffc8cc3460fb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educating for Witness"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward Foley Capuchin Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Janice J Brown O.P."],"subject_tesim":["Bible. This thesis-project looks at this manifestation as it unfolds as the legacy of apostolic women religious in the United States. The legacy of each participating congregation was described as a mission or more specifically as the mission of Jesus. It has also been the experience of these women religious that legacy is most tangible in the relationships and trust they built with their students, coworkers, and community members with whom they worked and partnered. The legacy of apostolic women religious is a witness to the gospel message that took root as Christianity two thousand years ago. The thesis-project begins by exploring the legacy of Jesus, as well as the historical context that furthers God’s mission through the lives of three historical women – Hildegard of Bingen, Catherine of Siena, and Angela Merici. The research then flows into the brief history of the Ursuline Sisters in the United States. Reviewing the pre and post-Vatican II eras and their influence on religious life helps lay a foundation upon which apostolic women today have been formed. The primary data was gathered through focus group discussions involving seven congregations consisting of thirty-five apostolic women religious. Their comments are summarized first by congregation in order to maintain the richness within each discussion, then by main themes, and concluded with a reflection on the legacy of these women as it finds meaning through the Gospel of John.Legacy has many definitions, but what surfaced most prominently was legacy as ministry, and the ministries are what define the women. Legacy efforts included developing relationships, education, healing, inclusivity, and service. All of these works could be imagined as the ongoing narrative of the Gospels, epitomized in the Beloved Disciple."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129017627181056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:01.481Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:08:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:59:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2c46b403-d15c-4ff9-a093-fc747d7447ba","accessControl_ssim":["f5051c7c-93aa-4e23-a7f5-99f7465b5a11"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Discerning the Next Step Helping Struggling Churches Find Their Way"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:08:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:25:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["374afc08-9e22-4bac-90e7-6f7e0b385847"],"hasLease_ssim":["f408e5d9-4ad2-4816-9113-e31f998db741"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["F Douglas Powe"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In addition to deepening our insights into the Scripture, literary criticism also provides important value to composing sermons. Personal testimonies realistically depict our everyday life and are at the core of who we are as Christians. In sharing our testimony of what God has done for us in a corporate worship service, we create the space for authentic God-talk to take place among Christians. The basic hypothesis is that since the advent of the megachurch, the small Black churches have followed the trend and exchanged the mid-week testimony and Bible study service for the 'pastor's Bible study.' In losing the testimony service, members lost the vehicle to share their stories and experiences of the Holy Spirit and how they have overcome in difficult situations. The author conducted seven weeks of workshops to educate members on testimony, narrative theology and hospitality, scheduled a week for members to share personal testimonies and listen as an act of love, and administered pre-surveys and post-surveys."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720526140145664,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:07:22.489Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
