A series of polarizing events including racial violence, police brutality, protests, riots, and a presidential election created a divided broader culture that was also experienced in the church. Pastors struggled to unite their congregations in the face of divisive rhetoric in the media and heated responses to issues dividing the culture down racial, socio-economic, and political lines. The goal of this case study was to help church members grow in their ability to communicate respectfully across cultural difference through intentional holistic discipleship\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a mixed methods approach (both qualitative and quantitative designs) using semi-structured interviews with sixteen members of one church who each experienced significant intercultural competence changes as measured by Intercultural Development Inventory®. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: 1. How did participants grow in CQ® during the year? 2. How did power dynamics affect participants’ growth in CQ® during the year? 3. What discipleship practices affected participants’ growth in CQ® during the year? and 4. What barriers hindered participants’ ability to grow in CQ® during the year?\r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on four key areas to understand how to grow in intercultural competence through holistic discipleship: the Acts church as an apologetic for cultural intelligence; cultural intelligence, power dynamics and discipleship and spiritual formation.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that growing in cultural intelligence, particularly in polarizing conditions in churches requires: 1) having leadership buy-in; 2) understanding the intercultural dynamics which include CQ® growth factors, an objective assessment of intercultural competence and power dynamics; and 3) maintaining a focus on the solution – gospel transformation through holistic discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2022/Hawkins_Vanessa_DMin_2022.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1814371711347326976,"timestamp":"2024-10-30T20:21:41.526Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:08:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:05:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"feb08658-7808-458f-a7fd-7ebc27873016","accessControl_ssim":["9e6d922a-2d64-4452-adf7-d693d65f7615"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Selected Adults of Marion First Baptist Church, Marion, Arkansas, with Essential Team-Based Assimilation Skills"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:08:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:24:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["04ed1fc4-45b1-42ff-9944-8062272fe891"],"hasLease_ssim":["37601082-5afb-4b94-8051-0fcaafd3f27a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jake Roudkovski Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"location_tesim":["Arkansas"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The cultural touchstones of recent years include racially motivated protesting and rioting, claims of systematic racism and white supremacy, climate crisis, record-level inflation, a rise in cultural interest in neo-Marxist and socialist ideas, supply-chain gridlock, claims of election fraud, and record-high crime rates throughout the country. Another of these cultural touchstones, and the contextual focus of this project, is the active attempt of America’s increasingly secular culture to deconstruct and redefine sex, gender, and other sexual norms. The zeitgeist of this cultural moment includes a decoupling of sex and gender, and an attempt to encourage and normalize transgender identities and/or gender fluidity. This cultural deconstructionism also runs contra to the Christian worldview and Judeo-Christian values which introduces unique theological and ecclesiological challenges within the local church context. Among these challenges is the question of how to faithfully approach local church membership decisions with candidates who personally experience the burdens of gender ideology—which is the focus of this project."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131700401537024,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:51:39.974Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:59:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:14:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e1208925-1df6-4e6c-b1eb-e4b0f6d11faa","accessControl_ssim":["1b694f09-040a-4360-b450-abc7353ed8c0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing an Online Ministry Model Training Tool at Northeast Houston Baptist Church in Humble, Texas"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:59:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:34:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3f9b3596-7b98-4d40-a494-dcc7c8575bb5"],"hasLease_ssim":["2f832a51-280c-4253-8e88-344a7f365368"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christ Osborne Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"location_tesim":["Texas"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James Robert Jordan Jr"],"subject_tesim":["Congregational Church","Leadership--Religious aspects","Baptist Church","Church membership","Christian life","Ministry"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project attempts to develop and train attendees of Northeast Houston Baptist Church—a church in Humble, Texas—in the vision, discipleship model, and evangelism strategy of the church to produce new leaders, which can be developed for the purpose of continued church planting in the Houston area. There are times a church can have the appearance of being a successful church, but the zeal of both the clergy and the respective congregation is slowly diminishing. The older generation continues to do their best to keep the ministry viable and alive to some degree, but at the same time, a younger generation, many times made up by millennials does not see the importance of the communal aspect of church other than what occurs on Sunday morning. It is becoming more obvious that that we are dealing with a generation of believers that are not like our parents or grandparents. Tradition appears not to be the millennials calling card. We will show that millennials love God, not just the church service that has stood for decades. Today’s church must provide opportunities for them to serve based upon their needs for church and commitment. The statistical data was gathered by the author of this thesis through several one-on-one discussions with the clergy of the five surveyed churches and with several millennial residents of the town of Haddonfield, New Jersey. Examples in the ministry of the apostle Paul were gathered from the MacDonald Believer’s Bible Commentary by William MacDonald and A Theology of the New Testament by George E.
