After a number of years of doing ministry, I found myself thinking that there has to be a better way, a healthier way to do this. It felt, at different times, like a matter of survival. And this combination between the personal and the professional is profound. I began to wonder why what was happening at church was affecting me so much personally. I believe it has to do with the nature of ministry. We are often dealing with ultimate issues-matters of life and death. And not just physical life and death, but spiritual, and eternal. In order to survive, then, I found myself asking some big questions of myself and of God. Why is this so difficult? Why am I struggling so much? Why do I keep getting stuck in the same place? What do I need to learn about myself and about God?"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1586"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135683441590272,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:58.497Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:30:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:15:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c39b9661-cdb6-483e-a0e4-ddbaf40bd9e0","accessControl_ssim":["335a274b-09d6-43ed-9f5e-ae33a3bbf24a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Deaf Pastor Cohort: Self-Care for Deaf Pastors"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:30:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:45:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ca9446bf-fda2-40bb-bed1-d0478d276f44"],"hasLease_ssim":["7a44069d-f89b-41df-9339-34fe448cb78e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Bethel Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Katie Friesen Smith"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Karen R Bregman"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Psychology","Clergy","Clergy--Mental health"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Researcher observed posts on social media from deaf pastors sharing their experiences of personal and professional struggles with suicide, depression, and mental health challenges with their close circle of pastors, colleagues, and congregation. These are tremendous burdens for both Deaf and hearing pastors. The scriptures cited for this research were 1 Kings 19, Psalm 23, and Mark 7:31-37; these Scriptures provide the theological basis that God provides self-care. The recipients became healthier emotionally, mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. The recipients were able to recover and minister to their respective congregations and communities. The Researcher conducted a qualitative case study on a small cohort of Deaf pastors. The Researcher created the research instruments, a Pre-Survey, and a Post-Survey, consisting of 30 multiple choice questions presented in English and ASL. Both surveys are fully accessible, linguistically and culturally. An 8-week curriculum moderated the Cohort activities. The Researcher conducted Individual interviews and facilitated two group discussions via Zoom. The Pre-Survey was administered before the Cohort, and the Post-Survey was administered after the Cohort. The first finding is that accessible education on self-care provided the pastors with positive reinforcement and improved overall well-being. The second finding is that consistent self-care and social contact, either in-person and through accessible technology, provides pastors with healthy, supportive, emotional, and social care for their overall well-being."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://spark.bethel.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1086\u0026context=etd"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129452718063616,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:15:56.415Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1500eafb-785c-48f2-a75b-5943c7ec39d1","accessControl_ssim":["6364eee6-f1f0-4645-a75a-c407e98e6b66"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Restoration of Pastors Who Left the Ministry in an Honor-Shame-Based Society like Singapore"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:44:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0ba95333-bb19-4fad-83e5-d1e89a321ae8"],"hasLease_ssim":["e50bb0f7-93e2-4a3c-a729-56235e2640c2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tasha Chapman Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2018"],"location_tesim":["Singapore"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nagarajan, Simon"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Psychology","Pastoral theology","Clergy--Mental health"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Pastoral ministry compacted with challenges. This project will focus on the role of the pastor as the key leader in their church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133435111145473,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:14.322Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:03:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:29:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"05e50476-f1de-4956-8e8c-bd52efcf2b66","accessControl_ssim":["d20aac36-2e41-4f3e-a292-9a2ba0259cac"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Not purely decorative: keeping the thread of the arts integral to the fabric of the private and professional life of the clergy-artist"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:03:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:17:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2ba82285-bbe6-43a0-9615-3bfb6a5ef851"],"hasLease_ssim":["1505bf2f-d782-44d4-9e56-343e4025a861"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah Sokolove"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Suffering represents various subjective emotions reflecting absent validation for the pastors. Clergy question their meaningfulness as well as confront the violation of deeply-held expectations regarding their vocation and results of their labors. Clergy seek to improve their circumstances by turning to spiritual, social, emotional, and/or intellectual resources. Greater healing may result, though, as clergy become 'co-creators' of meaning with God. Clergy may eventually integrate the suffering for an enriched faith perspective and enhanced gifts for spiritual leadership.
