A lack of space limits the number of student seats available, while tuition costs restrict access to families able to afford sky-high rates. Meanwhile, childcare teachers are paid low salaries for their services, and children living in poverty fall farther and farther behind. Such a challenge threatens not only a child’s livelihood, but also the congregation’s vision “that all may know God’s love.” This project will examine how the principles of adaptive leadership might reframe the congregation’s missiological understanding and practices via the work of education. Through a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the researcher implemented a six-week emotional intelligence program for fifteen African American high school students. The intervention consisted of two community excursions (a toy distribution service project and a bowling event) and four weekly coaching sessions focused on self-awareness, empathy, assertiveness, and heart-based decision-making.\r\n\r\nThe research was grounded in both theological and theoretical frameworks that emphasized the heart as the center of meaningful behavioral change, aligning with emotional intelligence principles. Data collection included pre- and post-intervention surveys, interviews, participant journaling, direct observation, and focus groups. Results demonstrated significant improvements in participants' decision-making approaches, with measurable growth in analytical thinking, reduced reliance on external validation, and increased decision confidence. Behavioral observations revealed enhanced social skills, empathy, and leadership emergence.\r\n\r\nThe findings suggest that developing emotional intelligence provides youth with effective tools to process trauma and make better decisions. This improvement was particularly evident in the dramatic increase in participant engagement between the first and second excursions. The project contributes valuable insights into addressing youth violence through heart-focused interventions rather than solely behavior-focused approaches, offering a model for community partnerships between law enforcement, schools, and faith communities to foster positive youth development in marginalized urban contexts."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1830201071766601728,"timestamp":"2025-04-23T13:42:36.003Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-05-17T16:40:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-17T16:40:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5b56df15-22bc-49ad-9cf7-18815f800601","accessControl_ssim":["cc201c94-822c-435e-8ce8-5601e8538a35"],"depositor_ssim":["ateter@eastminsterchurch.net"],"depositor_tesim":["ateter@eastminsterchurch.net"],"title_tesim":["The Cross-Cultural Community of Faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-05-17T16:40:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-17T16:40:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["798a2029-8964-4739-b853-ced2adb9c1a8"],"hasLease_ssim":["fc77bc83-8e03-4e9b-a10f-7d455379743e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation","D.Min. The study was conducted with seventy-four volunteers and six permanent deacons in the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative surveys and interviews. The hypothesis explored was whether or not the use of narrative techniques, specifically Narrative 4 story exchange would be useful as a technique for preparing congregations to be open to the challenges presented by Catholic social teaching. Additionally, the research sought to determine whether or not the six deacons who participated in the study would find narrative a useful technique in their preaching and evangelization efforts.Participants completed an empathy profile before viewing one of seven different videos produced by the United States Conference of Bishops on the Life and Dignity of the Human Person; the Call to Family, Community, and Participation; the Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; Rights and Responsibilities; Solidarity; Care for God’s Creation; and the Dignity of Work. Participants were asked to rate the videos and indicate how often they heard preaching of the subject matter of the videos. Participants were also given the opportunity to participate in a Narrative 4 story exchange. Participants were then asked to complete the Interpersonal Reactivity Index a second time to see if there was a statistically significant change in their empathy profile. In addition, participants were asked to evaluate their experience with the story exchange. While there was no significant statistical change, as measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the interviewees demonstrated a high level of approval for the story exchange as a vehicle for improving the empathetic response of a congregation and as a useful technique for use in the preaching of Catholic social teaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130070865149952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:45.927Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:07:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0112fc6-ce68-4239-bfe7-0f45e89aa757","accessControl_ssim":["ed5306b0-f5f9-4ce9-9b62-498568339ff8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A call to action : identifying and actualizing the social justice voice of the First Baptist Church of Highland Park"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:32:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3dfd0ecb-bf9d-4958-8612-bac7cb7f5952"],"hasLease_ssim":["0f047b98-17f5-491f-a058-68d4aa1c2c71"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C. This study offers an approach to SJM composition and leadership that engages the voices of church and community to inform the work of, ignite energy regarding, and invite activism to eradicate injustice.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720520861614080,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:07:17.454Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:15:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:14:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"39c3c609-e933-4565-8d4e-d46659c3ba32","accessControl_ssim":["311f94bc-9367-4229-9dae-c346a5aefa9b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing and implementing a public office ministry to grow a beloved community in Willingboro, New Jersey"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:15:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:48:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9c793e83-5ae8-4ac2-87bb-83ac9dd75a8e"],"hasLease_ssim":["8d90f6ee-b3cf-4d59-abe1-38c4933ba1b4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Missio Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kyuboem Lee D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["New Jersey","Pennsylvania"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carlos Sanchez Worthy"],"subject_tesim":["Social justice","Church and social problems","African American churches","Social action"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["As policies and decisions of elected and appointed officials withingovernmental structures continue to negatively impact the lives of people for generations, it is important for disciples of Christ to actively engage with a theology that focuses on reforming these structures to serve as a conduit of God’s love, justice, and peace. After viewing each video, fifteen participants then engaged in dialogue based upon questions included with each video session. The results of this research indicate that small groups are a safe, spiritual, and strategic way to break the silence of racial discourse. Martin School to address academic achievement disparities for low performing African-American males. If students participate in faith and culturally based extended school programs, then their academic performance improves. Explorations from qualitative research during a church led after school program were expounded. The approach incorporated prophetic activism based on themes of spirituality, educational inequity, and social learning and critical race theories. The data suggests partnerships between churches and schools improve outcomes for African-American male students.
