Centered on two congregations in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, this qualitative multiple-case study explores how church plants and community-rooted ministries navigate questions of sustainability, leadership, legitimacy, and mission within contexts shaped by economic disenfranchisement, racial marginalization, and uneven institutional support.\r\n\r\nDrawing upon interviews, congregational narratives, theological reflection, and ecclesiological analysis, this study investigates the organizational, relational, and theological patterns that contribute to congregational continuity and resilience. Particular attention is given to the ways ministry within marginalized communities frequently operates through networks of relational trust, communal presence, shared responsibility, adaptability, and spiritual commitment rather than through institutional models typically associated with dominant church-growth paradigms.\r\n\r\nThe findings reveal that congregational sustainability within marginalized contexts cannot be adequately measured solely through traditional institutional metrics such as financial stability, numerical growth, or organizational scale. Instead, participating congregations demonstrated forms of ecclesial vitality rooted in relational ecosystems of care, interdependence, community memory, and grassroots leadership. The study further identifies tensions between dominant ecclesial assumptions and the lived realities of ministries serving marginalized communities, particularly regarding how legitimacy, effectiveness, and sustainability are defined and evaluated.\r\nThis dissertation argues that broader theological and institutional conversations surrounding church planting, sustainability, and leadership formation must become more attentive to the experiences and insights emerging from marginalized congregational contexts. By centering the voices and practices of underrepresented ministry communities, this research contributes to practical theology and ecclesiology through a more relational, contextually grounded understanding of church, mission, and congregational life.\r\n\r\n"],"abstract_tesim":["This qualitative multiple-case study examines how two Black congregations in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania establish and sustain ecclesial life within socioeconomically marginalized contexts shaped by racial inequity, economic disenfranchisement, and uneven institutional support. Consisting of four stages and a final focus group the process is designed to incorporate practices that will, (1) enable deep and intentional listening and paying more careful attention to their own stories of their limitations and gifts, (2) be hosted by a group where the congregation is not the expert, and (3) partner with a community organization on this particular project to better learn about the congregation’s sense of missional vocation. These will help All Peoples Presbyterian Church discover a mutuality of giftedness, and an appreciation for building partnerships in the neighborhood. The project addresses a recurring ministry and leadership problem: a gap between leaders’ professed moral and spiritual commitments—such as care, dignity, and justice—and the operational practices that shape organizational life, often resulting in relational harm, burnout, and diminished trust. Employing a Practical Theological Method grounded in an iterative praxis cycle, the project engages lived leadership experience, critically reflects on the spiritual traditions of Metta, Agápē, Chesed, and Ubuntu, and integrates interdisciplinary insights from psychology, neuroscience, and organizational studies. The findings reveal that loving-kindness is not a passive or sentimental posture, but rather a disciplined, boundary-honoring leadership ethic that requires clarity, accountability, and just structures. To support implementation, the project offers an original Operating Model incorporating Four Levels of Leadership (Self, Others, Leaders, and Organizations) and seven core Loving-Kindness Leadership Practices. The project demonstrates that when loving-kindness is operationalized, it bridges belief and practice, fostering relational safety, ethical presence, and durable human and organizational flourishing."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/82d2d638-76dd-4960-8aba-9108b4bef497?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["82d2d638-76dd-4960-8aba-9108b4bef497"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Doctor of Ministry Dissertations and Projects"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["061a0024-1d62-4dba-b274-091512484660"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["82d2d638-76dd-4960-8aba-9108b4bef497"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["meadville.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["jdechant@meadville.edu"],"_version_":1864449847838375936,"timestamp":"2026-05-06T14:32:14.111Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a80b8768-6d87-4804-aaff-4cd84f31512a","accessControl_ssim":["52f54851-a536-4eb3-b431-535bb17fdc3c"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["8c70275f-1308-494d-aefe-cc3620048c2e"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["8c70275f-1308-494d-aefe-cc3620048c2e"],"depositor_ssim":["frankq142@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["frankq142@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Reflecting the Kingdom of God: Interculturality as a Praxis of Ministry for Multicultural Parishes"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d5cd7a8b-7290-457e-a97e-0c2577799240"],"hasLease_ssim":["14ec6a9c-1553-4fd5-9349-82bd0b1e0f64"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"year_tesim":["2026"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The case study meticulously examined the elements of ethnic coexistence, cultural and linguistic dominance, disparities in ethnic integration into the new community, power imbalances, and parish administrative structures as potential root causes of and perpetuation of ethnic segregation within multicultural Catholic parishes. In response to the challenges posed by a divided parish and the aspiration to transform it into a reflection of the Kingdom of God, as described in the Lumen Gentium, which portrays the church as the beginning of the Kingdom of God, the thesis proposes interculturality grounded on the perichoretic community as a transformative praxis. This approach has the potential to transform division into communion due to its inherent characteristics of interdependence, mutuality, and respect and appreciation for diversity. The objective of intercultural living in this work is to guide parishes through mutuality towards a parish community that embodies the Kingdom of God in accordance with Lumen Gentium’s description of the Church as “a seed and beginning of the Kingdom of God.”"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/5cf3fce0-ebe0-4b1a-b6ee-462d5c08631a?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["5cf3fce0-ebe0-4b1a-b6ee-462d5c08631a","1702be58-ac31-4b88-b4bb-e02ea78cf869"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["5cf3fce0-ebe0-4b1a-b6ee-462d5c08631a","1702be58-ac31-4b88-b4bb-e02ea78cf869"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["frankq142@gmail.com"],"_version_":1863832812657836032,"timestamp":"2026-04-29T19:04:43.506Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-04-24T14:13:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-24T14:13:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"95c3ec20-135e-4ffe-9d0b-ba772862840d","accessControl_ssim":["c7fa2c20-2a7d-4b5c-8925-8c1234a80ca6"],"depositor_ssim":["styberg.library@garrett.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["styberg.library@garrett.edu"],"title_tesim":["Retreating from Empire, Returning to God: A Decolonizing CPAR Retreat with Asian American Christians"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-04-24T14:13:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-24T14:13:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["3df011d0-8abf-40e1-bcb8-0d2628dbd35f"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1b3b256d-17c4-4dc7-bc39-2c7871433a62"],"hasLease_ssim":["ff4f8147-38d4-4f99-9913-37ce86fa32f0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2026"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Addressing concerns about spiritual fragmentation and relational isolation among college students, the research employed a qualitative case study with nine participants engaged in recurring, facilitated communal meals over one academic semester. Data collection involved participant observation and semi-structured interviews, analyzed thematically. Findings indicate that communal meals fostered (1) shared identity formation, (2) embodied belonging, and (3) collective meaning-making around purpose and vocation.
