Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James R Driscoll"],"publisher_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelistic work--Theory","Christian education of adults"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Based on interviews and a survey conducted in Harmony United Methodist Church in Hamilton, Virginia, this project determines four obstacles that hinder personal evangelism: negative attitudes about evangelism, lack of ability to do evangelism, no sense of a mandate from Jesus Christ, and a perception that there are no opportunities to evangelize. The project provides a means to overcome these obstacles through development of a workbook and a study course used with a focus group at Harmony Church in the fall of 1995. A survey United States Army chaplains currently stationed in the Republic of South Korea indicates that a majority of these chaplains are survivors of profound loss during childhood. Of these chaplains, 36.3 percent reported an alcoholic parent and 68.7 percent reported an experience of loss due to alcohol that had positvie impact on their professional identity. Biblical theology and social-science data form the context in which loss can be integrated. Inner healing, healthy sexuality, and spiritual growth require that men resolve inner conflicts resulting from fear of intimacy and mutuality in relationships, anger and abuse of power and persons, and contemporary male role expectations.  This project proposes that the local church should be the primary setting for this work in the lives of men of faith. Research of current literature and resources identified critical issues for male sexuality and masculine spirituality.  Workshop sessions addressed several of these issues in three local church retreats for men. Sexual minority youth who grow up in the church become alienated from the church as they discover their sexual orientation is different from the majority.  Currently, the only support systems for sexual minority youth are secular. Reconciling churches and clergy welcome sexual minority persons as part of their ministry. This ministry is a contrast to the current climate in our country, our culture, and our churches. Ministry that affirms racial identity, self-concept and community empowerment can bring about the transformation of African-American United Methodist churches.  The project outlined was a study of some of the themes of Afrocentric spirituality and implementation of those themes in programs of ministry. Two projects, a rite of passage program for boys and a convocation-type event, were developed and evaluated. The case study provides implications for other congregations attempting a similar re-creation as well as suggestions for various levels of the United Methodist connectional system.
