The method used is a case study of Memorial United Methodist Church, a congregation which committed itself to changing its racial composition.  The case study provides implications for other congregations attempting a similar re-creation as well as suggestions for various levels of the United Methodist connectional system. Black males are fraught with negative societal perceptions in Alexandria and need support in positive self-esteem, moral, and spiritual persuasion.  They are victimized by poor education, poor economics, and a shrinking labor market.  Many young Black males are involved in a life of crime as the result of hopelessness. The project's method of study examines the function of narrative theology to biblical story and storytelling with the church being the primary educational setting for children to learn and to experience the biblical stories of faith.  A theoretical base discussing children's religious thinking lays the foundation for biblical storytelling as one paradigm for shaping Christian growth in children.  Two methods for skills development in storytelling for adults are presented.  Complete lessons plans for workshops using the project's research as reference are outlined. Suggested evaluation techniques for workshops are discussed. Small group work with children and program ideas are also presented. Pre- and post-intervention interviews were conducted.  A literature review relates to academic failure of African-American students. It is exacerbated today because of an unbalanced reliance on the historical-critical method and on a unhealthy trend toward the privatization of faith.  We can recover the story of our lives, the biblical narrative that is identity-shaping.  To do so entails the use of an inclusive hermeneutic, one which draws us into an intentional dialogue with the text and with one another. This thesis was tested by conducting a six-week Bible study on selected passages from Matthew for the Administrative Board and Council of Ministries of Clonmell United Methodist Church.  As a followup to this study, the annual planning session for the church was conducted and a new mission statement was developed with visioning and goal-setting. In today's economy a full-time priest serving one altar places severe demands on these congregations.  As small churches over-invest financially in clergy deployment they also over-invest emotionally.  An atmosphere is created where clergy are expected to over-function to match the high level of investment.  The stresses caused by this phenomena are causing clergy 'burn-out' while these small cures are becoming harder to fill.  The project/thesis explores the connection between financial over-investment and the emotional expectations to over-function.
