Such understanding took concrete form when twelve people undertook a structured project involving group study, journaling, and direct involvement with the homeless and their advocates. A proposal calling for church involvement with the homeless evolved. The strength of the project/study arose out of one constant: exploring the relationship between spirituality and servanthood. The thesis tested was whether literature can be used more effectively than traditional Bible study to change attitudes of class participants. Three groups were tested: a class reading Will D Campbell's The Glad River, a Bible study group looking at biblical themes of community, and another class serving as a control group. An identical questionnaire was administered before and after the studies, and the responses were compared and evaluated.
