The author studied this integrated approach to spiritual formation through a case study methodology involving thirteen volunteers who spent eight weeks 'breathing in' through weekly sessions of prayer, Bible study, and reflection, and 'breathing out' through weekly trips to a homeless shelter. Data was collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and journals. The author found this thesis confirmed in every respect. Measuring the right criterion, parishioners' satisfaction, can influence the quality of ministry pastors provide. This qualitative case study describes how chaplains and congregations understand ministry and uses the business model conjointly with the biblical theology to measure parishioners' satisfaction. As a pro-active observer, the researcher coordinated two annual conferences and seventeen discussion groups to identify the elements of ministry in a military chapel setting which best defines and encourages quality ministry in three army chapels. In the vernacular of a southern Appalachian culture and with the gospel of Mark as a framework, the author composes an annotated story of a hillbilly Jesus, who emerges from Newport, Tennessee, from the southeastern region near the Great Smoky Mountains. After examining various forms of church community life, the author turns to Acts to discover a model that appeals to people in the postmodern context without abandoning the church's Pentecostal essence. He then defines the essence of Pentecostalism so non-essential traditions can be adjusted to enhance evangelism in the setting.
