Dealing with the sensitive topic regarding a pastor and his children through the method of expository preaching allows one to depend upon the authority of God’s Word while drawing attention to the necessity of upholding this neglected pastoral qualification.After addressing the biblical and theological foundations for this topic (chapter 2) and reviewing its related literature (chapter 3), the importance of text-driven preaching is discussed by focusing on the biblical authority, examples throughout history, and benefits of this approach to preaching (chapter 4).Chapter 5 reveals the exegesis of the passages pertinent to this topic from 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. Chapter 6 provides six principles one should implement when constructing text-driven sermons and how the application of these principles formed three sermons from the relevant texts for this project. Chapter 7 details the conclusions drawn after preaching these respective sermons to a test group of ministers. This pilot study (n=4) explored the effectiveness of its curriculum on spiritual growth, vocational discernment, and the use of spiritual practices. The curriculum included book studies, mission outreach, and the spiritual practices of prayer, Scripture reading, silence, and shared work like the Taizé community. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected at baseline, mid-point, and endpoint. Vietnamese are quite familiar with tales, legends, fables, and biblical stories. Whereas, the significance of the use of imagery in liturgical preaching is supported by many Church documents, especially Pope Francis' preaching works. He encourages the use of images in the homily because “An attractive image makes the message seem familiar, close to home, practical and related to everyday life. A successful image can make people savor the message, awaken a desire, and move the will towards the Gospel” (EG. no. 157). Meanwhile, storytelling can play well in the role of providing imagery. Aquinas Institute of Theology, Saint Louis, Missouri, 2021. Sexual Abuse is neither new nor limited to the current century. Interest in the efficacy of preaching about sexual abuse to enlighten congregational listeners and to convey the healing message of the Gospel has evolved alongside church educational programs designed to prevent sexual abuse in churches.This thesis project helped a small group of preachers learn to preach about sexual abuse to their own congregations. It asks what the effects on listeners are when they hear such sermons and on preachers when they preach them. Chapter One provides background for preaching about sexual abuse, describes the reasons for the project, and discusses published resources that advocate for such preaching. The chapter concludes that such preaching is appropriate.Chapter Two integrates the scriptural, theological, and homiletical foundations of preaching. Both the healing texts of the Gospels, and some of the dark texts of sexual abuse and sexual violence are considered.Chapter Three considers sexual abuse in its the social and cultural environment. It helps preachers understand what is going on in the world outside the church so they can bridge from there to the world of the Gospel. It also describes ways in which churches and clergy have used scripture to harm victims of sexual abuse. Chapter Four describes the ministerial intervention by four preachers. It describes how the preachers were selected, how surveys for the preachers and their listeners were constructed and used, and the formation of congregation focus groups. Brief demographic data of the congregations involved and of the cities in which they were located was provided.Chapter Five describes the findings from the surveys, workshops, and focus groups, and interprets them in the context of the thesis project. This inevitability of change and transition should promptevery active lead pastor to understand that the place you stand in today may in fact be theplace another stands in tomorrow. To be fully cognizant of that reality aids in the pastor’sability to be able to see beyond the present and to begin thinking about and perhaps evenpreparing for the unavoidable future of the present ministry. Pastoral enmeshment and theimproper views of competition in ministry must be countered with a clear understandingof the pastor as a steward who is called to build the Lord’s kingdom, not a personal one.Succession planning, then, must include a theology of leadership development and a clearunderstanding of what a healthy pastorate looks like. There must be a mutual synergy ofpastor and people who can appreciate yesterday and today and yet still anticipate withgreater affection the possibility of tomorrow. This work identifies biblical models forsuccession and offers practical methods to prepare the pastor and people for eventualtransitions.Without attention to succession planning, a church and its pastor succumbs tobeing reactive at best, and negligent at worst, by waiting for a crisis to unfold as a resultof inevitable changes in leadership. Keller’s methodology for preaching is Christ-centered, text-centered, compassionate, exegetically sound, and pastoral. He applies some elements of text-driven preaching. This project chooses twenty of Keller’s sermons from the Old and New Testaments in three different genres (Story, Poetry, and Epistles) to examine his preaching model. This project’s primary goal is to enhance pastoral ministry’s effectiveness through preaching, particularly in moments of crisis and tragedy.John M. Frame’s Perspectives on the Word of God and Vern S. Poythress’s Symphonic Theology shape Keller’s three-perspective model for preaching. Both of them argue that applying multiple exegesis perspectives helps deliver absolute truth and relevant application in the different contexts of the audience. Keller’s preaching methodology can be named “incarnational preaching” because Christ’s incarnation and ministries are evident in all these three perspectives. The result shows that Keller applies almost equal emphasis to both biblical and situational perspectives in his sermons. Sometimes he applies more emphasis to the situational perspective than to the biblical perspective so that the modern audience could comprehend and apply biblical truth to their lives. Additionally, Keller’s personal view takes less than 14 percent of his sermons. It shows that his personal experience and preferences do not dominate his sermons. Keller is willing to share his weakness and get involved with the audience. He shows his compassion for the suffering and expresses his passion for the Gospel. Keller is like a friend of the bridegroom to show that Christ is the center of the entire wedding because “he (Christ) must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:29-30).Keller demonstrates how to balance, integrate, and unite biblical, situational, and personal perspectives in his preaching. By observing Keller’s sermons, preachers could find that utilizing Keller’s three-perspective model helps explain the text and capture the whole picture. Chapter Two invites adult learning theory—and the burgeoning field of transformative learning theory born of it—into the conversation to inform both the structure and content of the reflective practice pages that are the building blocks of the thesis project intervention. In conversation with the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States, the chapter offers a preliminary list of key principles salient to the pedagogical design of the project intervention.  Chapter Three brings in the lens of practical theology with its consistent starting point in everyday lived practice and experience to sharpen the focus toward the deep faith context of this thesis project. The faith practices of preaching within the context of Eucharist and teaching preaching within the context of a deacon formation program suggest additional site-specific pedagogical concerns. The elements of a site-specific instructional design are now in place. Chapter Four details the thesis project learning intervention. The chapter outlines the purpose and process of the preparatory research that resulted in the project catalogue of characteristics and quotations, and it provides a thick description of diaconal formation in the Diocese of Evansville, with special attention to the role of Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, Evansville’s partner in diaconal formation. An annotated example of a weekly reflective practice page and an analysis of its components relative to the site-specific pedagogical principles proposed in Chapter Three completes the chapter.Chapter Five presents and analyzes the qualitative data collected over the twenty-three weeks of the project with respect to both aggregate and individual participant trajectories toward connoisseurship of effective preaching.
