Exploring the issues supported by empirical research, the study discloses the cultural and generational differences that influence the celebration and transmission of the Syro-Malabar ecclesial heritage in the new place of settlement and attempts to offer practical solutions based on communion ecclesiology and the principle of correlation. This will be explored through three avenues. The first is a spiritual autobiography describing the author’s own spiritual formation in response to the question: How will I know God’s voice? The author’s discernment of vocational call to spiritual direction and supervision will be shared. The second is through the development of a Trinitarian Spiritual Formation Model as informed by Trinitarian Spiritual Formation anchored in trinitarian theology. In the face of hybrid forms of spiritual direction, this understanding of spiritual formation will be applied to the question: What makes spiritual direction, spiritual direction? The third is through a field research project that attends to the spiritual formation of Tyndale graduate spiritual directors. The project is guided by the question: Does attending to the spiritual formation of directors through a contemplative evocative approach better equip them to discern a calling to the supervision of directors? Young people in the world and in the Church are full of potential, and it is incumbent upon preachers to harness that potential through their preaching. Unfortunately, many adolescents find contemporary sermons laborious and irrelevant. Young people are in a constant state of flux due to the physiological, neurological, psychological, and spiritual changes taking place in adolescence. Those in the thick of this period of tumultuous development desire, and deserve, to be heard by their parents, their teachers, and especially their priests or ministers—and to receive engaging, pertinent homilies. This thesis aims to equip preachers with five principles of preaching for adolescents: Authenticity, Directness, Engagement, Relevance, and Relationality. These principles are based on the current scientific research of adolescent brain development, psychosocial theories, and spiritual development as well as the responses of actual adolescents who participated in eight Adolescent Focus Group Interviews concerning their real-life experiences of preaching. To test the effectiveness of these five principles of preaching, four priests engaged in a process of self-reflection and homily evaluation. They responded to a self-inventory on their understanding of preaching for adolescents, and they also preached homilies which were evaluated by adolescents. In addition to the self-inventories and homily evaluations, the priests attended three workshops on those five principles of preaching for adolescents. The results of the priests’ self-inventories and the adolescent homily evaluations demonstrated that the adolescent evaluators responded positively to the priests’ implementation of Authenticity, Directness, Engagement, Relevance, and Relationality. Chapter 1 presents the history and ministry context of Mayhill Baptist Church and the goals of this project. Chapter 2 provides exegesis of several passages of Scripture (Eph 4:11-12; Matt 28:16-20; various passages in the Gospels, Romans, and Acts; Heb 3:12-14) to show that God commands pastors to equip the saints and every saint to make disciples. Chapter 3 posits the position that for ministry effectiveness to occur, the load of evangelism is not carried only by the pastor, but by every member of the church. Chapter 4 describes the project itself, including the timing and teaching methodology along the way. Chapter 5 evaluates the success of the project based on the completion of specified goals. The intervention included Sermon content, B.E.L.L.S., D groups, and Intercessory prayer. The researcher was motivated by a desire to increase church leaders and members desire for and frequency of gospel conversations. The researcher utilized the five missional habits given by Michael Frost in his book, Surprise the World: The Five Habits of Highly Missional People. The five habits are Bless, Eat, Listen, Learn, and Sent. A six-week sermon series was designed to highlight the need to live a Questionaable Life, and the five missional habits. Participants signed up to be in a D group members committed to be in worship weekly, meet with their D group weekly, and pray for one another, as well as each person D group members were praying to have an evangelistic conversation with. The results of the data gathered pre- and post-intervention was measured using a mix-methods approach. A pastor who wants to equip people to be missional sees that they are already participating in God’s mission through their vocations. This qualitative research involved interviewing eight pastors who are leading their congregants to be missional in their vocations. The literature review explored the mission of God’s people and a theology of vocation. The interviews discovered what pastors attempted to help people be missional though their vocations, what challenges they faced, and their results. A massive media shift,comparable to the dawn of the printing press, has been changing cultures worldwide for over adecade. While resources regarding media ecology are increasingly available—as are resourcesdealing with expository preaching and culture—preachers lack resources for expositing thescriptures in a digital age, with its shifting epistemologies. The purpose of this study is toexamine how preachers navigate the challenges of expositing the scriptures to digitally saturatedcongregants.Four research questions guided this qualitative study: 1. In what ways do pastors describethe effects of digital saturation on the lives of their congregants? 2. What challenges do pastorsexperience in intentionally preaching expositionally to engage their digitally saturatedcongregants? 3. What opportunities do pastors experience in intentionally preachingexpositionally to engage their digitally saturated congregants? 4. What strategies do pastorsemploy in meeting the challenges posed by intentionally preaching expositionally to engage theirdigitally saturated congregants?The findings of the study show that the current media ecology has shifted indemonstrable ways from that of the print age, giving way to emerging epistemologies. This studyalso reveals valid concerns regarding the emerging digital ecology and the church’s vital need tobetter understand these epistemologies. The failed pastor’s family undoubtedly will suffer embarrassment, shame, and emotional duress. This qualitative study explored how “sandwich generation” pastors navigate the simultaneous demands of ministry and caregiving. Data from semi-structured interviews with seven pastors was analyzed using the constant comparative method. The research examined challenges, benefits, and coping strategies of “sandwiched” pastors. This study concluded that “sandwiched” clergy experience the most significant challenges in the personal arena, while also experiencing significant benefits in the arenas of personal life, marriage, and vocation.
