Significant people in the Bible, including Jesus, were described as white by missionaries and early users of the Bible. Thus, it is vital to recognize and expose Black heritage in the Bible and Christianity through preaching to expand self-esteem and win religious favor among members of the African American community. Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and the presence of Black people in the Bible will build a sense of belonging, while allowing infinite religious expression. Analysis of preaching Black presence in the Bible to build up self-esteem of African American congregations is the intent of this thesis. Can the comic spirit enliven preaching in these contexts? This is not just a theoretical question but a practical and pastoral one. A praxis for preaching with the comic spirit may be characterized by the intentional use of humor, levity, wit, and comedy to reveal theological insights. Sermons in LGBTQ+ affirming congregations can be more effective by utilizing expressions of the comic spirit that are informed by the respective contexts, with special interest given to the intersectional identities and lived experiences of queer listeners. The author, an openly queer ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, engages this topic as a self-examination of praxis and centers his research primarily within three Houston congregations. Before presenting findings, literary reviews include a queering of cishet scholarship in comic homiletics and an examination of queer theologians as cognate to further inform the contextualized praxis. Where cishet homileticians have studied stand-up comedians, the author bridges the queer research gap by exploring drag performers as muse. A four-part research approach—including surveys, focus groups, field observations, and interviews—serves to inform the developing praxis and prove the thesis: the comic spirit can enliven and enhance preaching in LGBTQ+ affirming contexts. Three homiletical strategies for a queer-informed comic spirit emerge from the project: (1) disarming tension to engage the listener, (2) fostering congregational connection, and (3) balancing depth and levity. Each of these strategies serve to impact the listener through queer-affirming sermons that inspire theological insights."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/bc8257c6-8b09-484e-a9a5-eca5a518cba7?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["bc8257c6-8b09-484e-a9a5-eca5a518cba7"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["DMin Papers"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5fee7d74-6f58-4c88-a3b1-860b847dd7c2"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["bc8257c6-8b09-484e-a9a5-eca5a518cba7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836659645558554624,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T20:38:51.949Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-21T19:55:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T19:50:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ec8c56ea-294e-4004-9625-44934c10ddcd","accessControl_ssim":["0df4a9fe-f27f-4d7c-b053-1dc2443bff47"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["d8b7a35b-6eda-404d-82da-c7555a682085"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["d8b7a35b-6eda-404d-82da-c7555a682085"],"depositor_ssim":["jessica.margraveschirm@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["jessica.margraveschirm@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Preaching to Remember, Recognize and Re-Invigorate - Empowering Grinnell United Church of Christ Congregational to Re-Imagine its Activist Roots and be a Force for Justice in the Twenty-First Century"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-21T19:55:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T19:50:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ab29e800-3b80-42cd-a005-863220f5d41a"],"hasLease_ssim":["28fd1bc5-9f78-4d6c-9f24-a35b429f1b8c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Located in Grinnell, Iowa, a small town with a population of 10,000, Grinnell UCC is a predominantly white, highly educated, and middle-class congregation, with a rich history rooted in abolitionism and a commitment to justice, inclusivity, and economic equity. This project explores the role of preaching in mobilizing the congregation to reclaim its abolitionist roots, engage in contemporary struggles for justice, and transform into a force for ethical and political activism in the Twenty-First Century.\r\n\r\nThe church’s commitment to social justice has evolved through multiple historical movements, including the Social Gospel Movement of the early Twentieth Century and the Civil Rights Movement, and most recently, through its adoption of an Open and Affirming covenant and a focus on accessibility and economic justice. Despite these efforts, there is an ongoing need to deepen the congregation’s engagement with justice in ways that address both historical and contemporary issues, particularly through the lens of abolitionist and liberation theologies. This project, therefore, examines how preaching through an activist and social justice-oriented lens can catalyze the congregation’s growth in this way and reimagine its role in promoting justice.\r\n\r\nBy remembering the church’s abolitionist past, recognizing its current justice priorities and re-invigorating the congregation’s imagination of a more just world in the future, this research aims to empower Grinnell UCC to take more effective action in its local context, with a focus on how privilege and positionality can be leveraged in the pursuit of justice. Ultimately, this work seeks to inspire both the present congregation and future generations of Grinnell UCC members to continue the church’s legacy of justice, ensuring that the faith community remains a vital force for positive change in the world, rooted in the teachings of Jesus with a commitment to the flourishing of all people.\r\n\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/d8b7a35b-6eda-404d-82da-c7555a682085?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["d8b7a35b-6eda-404d-82da-c7555a682085"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["DMin Papers"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5fee7d74-6f58-4c88-a3b1-860b847dd7c2"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["d8b7a35b-6eda-404d-82da-c7555a682085"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["jessica.margraveschirm@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836656604038037504,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T19:50:31.329Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-04T03:00:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T15:54:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8181f9fa-91c2-4053-86d0-e286f2cee640","accessControl_ssim":["cf77f9f8-1ddc-4815-83e6-0f12a0c34623"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["7507d833-2c0f-44d0-97b6-a199af589be8"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["7507d833-2c0f-44d0-97b6-a199af589be8"],"depositor_ssim":["dezo.schreiner@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["dezo.schreiner@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Overcoming The Challenges of Preaching in An Intercultural Congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-04T03:00:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T15:54:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a53ce632-919d-4253-9ee8-1bad7f866a90"],"hasLease_ssim":["90b3afed-2b4d-4af6-9327-296ba05d5709"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Due to a hurricane’s social and psychological impact, many find it difficult to return to normal life. Unfortunately, most priests are unaware of this problem that affects our parishioners. While some may scratch it on the surface, others avoid preaching about trauma because they do not know how to address it in their preaching. I developed and tested a program that could help priests in the Diocese of Fajardo Humacao, Puerto Rico, craft and deliver trauma and hope-informed sermons using the narrative preaching approach. The narrative approach affords preachers a wonderful opportunity to communicate the gospel in exciting, new, and unexpected ways.\r\nChapter 1 outlines the project’s ministerial context, problem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and definition of terms. Chapter 2 explores the project’s interdisciplinary framework. It shows how other fields of knowledge, especially sociology and psychology, collaborate with theology to help hurricane trauma survivors. Chapter 3 presents the thesis project’s biblical and theological foundations. It explores “traumatic suffering” and Christian hope. It anchors on the New Testament perspective, which speaks of suffering redeemed by Christ and invites Christians to come to the life of faith in our suffering. It also explores The Apostolic letter of Pope John Paul II, Salvifici doloris, and the Encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI, Spe salvi, which, respectively, provide a lens into the Church’s teaching on suffering and the nature of Christian hope. Chapter 4 presents the project’s homiletic framework. It defines and discusses trauma and hope-informed preaching and highlights why a trauma and hope-informed sermon is essential to helping hurricane trauma survivors on the path to recovery and healing. It also sets the homiletical structure for crafting and delivering trauma and a hope-informed sermon using the narrative approach. \r\nDuring the Winter (16 February to 13 April) of 2024, three preachers—Priests of the Diocese of Fajardo Humacao and seventeen (focus group) members of the La Resurreccion Parish community—participated in a seven-week trauma and hope-informed seminar and sermon series. Hence, Chapter 5 sets out the project intervention events. Chapter 6 discusses the findings of data analysis and evaluations, presenting an overview of this project’s impact on hurricane trauma survivors of the La Resurreccion Parish Community, the effectiveness of the intervention events, and its prospects. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-EDU/1.0/"],"rights_notes_tesim":["Copyright © 2025 by Canice Chukwuemeka Njoku, C.S.Sp. Biblical literacy is declining which means that engagement from a place of faith in the public sphere is also declining. This risks scripture being misinterpreted in public spaces and leaves us without an engaged biblically literate audience with the skills to push back. This paper argues that narrative preaching is the most effective model of preaching to a modern audience to engage them. This paper argues that prophetic preaching about economic justice can transform the community. In this context, I define prophetic preaching as speaking to or addressing the systemic barriers that have historically, culturally, politically, physically, mentally, spiritually, and economically, undervalued, underestimated, or marginalized people of African descent (in the United States) with the purpose of offering an analysis and critique for correction. This paper will address prophetic preaching with a lens towards an analysis and critique of what is required to preach prophetically concerning the economic barriers that prevent economic justice. Thus, prophetic preaching about economic justice to achieve economic justice requires three pillars to ultimately transform the community: 1) the preacher must have a growing knowledge of financial literacy: meaning an understanding of how the economy functions on a micro and macro level. 2) The preacher must advocate for progressive public policy in the context of a local, state, national and/or global economy. 3) Finally, the preacher must demonstrate the ability to utilize substantial financial resources to empower their ministerial context which optimistically includes the broader community. Ultimately, this paper argues that for preachers to develop sermons that centers issues of economic justice, the preacher must first begin by striving to be financially literate. Apophatic preaching can subvert idolatrous concepts, which prevent this encounter. I describe apophatic preaching as preaching nothing (content) in nothing (prayer) with nothing (language).\r\n\r\nMy thesis aims to test the effectiveness of apophatic preaching in evoking an experience of the mystery of God by negative language inspired by Christian apophatic mystics. To be more specific, I intend for apophatic preaching to help congregations become self-critical of their understanding of God, appreciate that God transcends reasoning, learn the practice of letting go of habits of selfishness and ways of seeing God, and see prayer in terms of interior silence.\r\n\r\nI tested apophatic preaching with an RCIA group at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC. I tested how this group experienced a series of eight sermons in March and April of 2022. I tested how the group experienced apophatic preaching with a survey the group answered after every sermon. The survey had both “yes or no” and open-ended questions. I then administered a three-question survey to a subset of the RCIA group after the initial preaching series concluded. Finally, I invited an observer to all the sermons and asked for this person’s observations in an informal interview and over email. \r\n\r\nThis thesis contributes to the field of homiletics by describing apophatic preaching, employing it in preaching, and testing its effectiveness. As a result of this process, I discovered that apophatic preaching could make a congregation pay attention and engage with a message as it both subverts fossilized images of God and evokes the divine mystery present with the congregation."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/a5bf2d89-2326-4c62-b6ce-f2b026ae204f?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["a5bf2d89-2326-4c62-b6ce-f2b026ae204f"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["a5bf2d89-2326-4c62-b6ce-f2b026ae204f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["nihtgottes000@yahoo.com"],"_version_":1797976503338663936,"timestamp":"2024-05-02T21:06:52.736Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-02-05T16:23:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:24:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"28f203e8-ed97-4596-8209-5647d36c13ca","accessControl_ssim":["6e35c597-6b80-44e8-851c-1276c7a25851"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"depositor_ssim":["dntoole@diobpt.org"],"depositor_tesim":["dntoole@diobpt.org"],"title_tesim":["Trauma-Informed Preaching and Racial Justice"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-02-05T16:23:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:19:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2cbbaff2-1d02-447f-a3e1-957ce18093f1"],"hasLease_ssim":["d8063e5e-2335-4032-bc88-60c77e7d5108"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Toole, Patrick"],"keyword_tesim":["Trauma","Racial Justice","Preaching"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Preaching"],"abstract_tesim":["In the aftermath of the tragic killing of George Floyd and subsequent racial unrest that divided the nation, Catholic preachers have largely remained silent. The preachers in my diocese have also been reluctant to speak out. I developed and tested a training program to prepare and motivate priests and deacons within the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut, to preach on racial justice through trauma-informed instruction. Trauma-informed instruction includes the science of trauma and its effects on the body, along with a theological perspective and preaching structures based on these insights.\r\n\r\nThe first chapter outlines the thesis project’s genesis, ministerial context, problem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and limitations. Chapter 2 investigates the thesis project’s interdisciplinary framework. This chapter examines the relationship between fear and racism, the relevance of the trauma recovery process to racial justice preaching, and advice for preachers based on insights from trauma-informed psychology. Chapter 3 explores my theological framework. This chapter uses Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Holy Saturday theology as a metaphor for racial trauma survivors. The chapter also applies trauma-informed theology to racial justice preaching. Chapter 4 articulates the thesis’ homiletic foundation. This chapter discusses trauma-informed preaching and racial trauma, analyzes preaching on racial justice, and presents preaching structures and methods for challenging topics, such as racism. \r\n\r\nFive priests and five deacons attended my racial justice training program in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from October 5, 2023, through December 15, 2023. Chapter 5 presents this ministerial intervention in detail. Chapter 6 presents the thesis study’s results, including quantitative and qualitative data triangulated from multiple sources that support the hypothesis that trauma-informed instruction prepares and motivates preachers to speak on racial justice. The chapter also examines lessons learned and suggests areas of improvement for future training programs. It concludes with a discussion of future opportunities. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["b6edc6ac-cc4e-439e-b14c-d4d64316ea07","c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["b6edc6ac-cc4e-439e-b14c-d4d64316ea07","c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dntoole@diobpt.org"],"_version_":1791129999537864704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:24:37.904Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-01-23T17:20:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d5218668-a334-423e-a72f-db47d5d15bbf","accessControl_ssim":["37c269c7-a2e6-4ab8-a14b-904eecd40876"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["562f25f6-eb30-451b-9ebf-5aa2922e6b1b"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["562f25f6-eb30-451b-9ebf-5aa2922e6b1b"],"depositor_ssim":["father.mowry@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["father.mowry@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Parishioner Feedback on Seminarian Preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-01-23T17:20:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:13:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1df373d3-36e1-41c4-920d-07fb70deeee4"],"hasLease_ssim":["2b9b48cc-e2fc-4a3f-8d5c-42f74c25701e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"format_tesim":["PDF"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah L. The chapter presents the context of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary as uniquely suited to the aims of the thesis project: developing the Affective Feedback model which relies upon the spiritual experience of the parishioner-listener as the source of feedback to the seminarian-preacher.\r\n\r\nChapter Two presents the central metaphor of a bridge to explain the theoretical frameworks of the Affective Feedback model. The chapter establishes three theological pillars for this bridge: the pneumatology of the Gift of God, the sensus fidei, and Ignatian affective discernment.\r\n\r\nChapter Three explains how listener-oriented preaching serves as the homiletic suspension cables of the Affective Feedback bridge. The practical ecclesiology of Pope Francis, the inductive preaching homiletic of Fred Craddock, and insights into listener relevance from Karla Bellinger manifest the tensile strength that feedback requires.\r\n\r\nChapter Four introduces interdisciplinary wisdom from communication studies in the business world to establish the deck of the Affective Feedback bridge. In conversation with Douglas Stone, Sheila Heen, and Therese Huston, the chapter lays out the practical theology of effective feedback conversations.\r\n\r\nChapter Five details the Affective Feedback model, this thesis project’s ministerial intervention. The chapter gives thick descriptions of the institutional context, participants, structure, and evaluation of the ministerial intervention.\r\n\r\nChapter Six analyzes the limitations and data of the intervention. The analysis examines seminarian interviews and parishioner questionnaires to demonstrate how parishioners moved toward basing their feedback on affective impact and how seminarians grew in appreciation for parishioner’s praise.
