The focus of the study is how the congregation moved from being a divided and conflicted community to a community that is growing and vital. The perspective that is taken in this study is a systems approach that sees the church as much more than the sum of its parts and examines how various systems came together to promote health or dysfunction. This case study revealed that church revitalization is complex dynamic that requires more than a programmatic approach. Findings supported in this study are: 1) Understanding the history of both congregation and leadership is important for church health. 2) The mix of positive and negative influences that shape a congregation and its leadership and their interplay need to be understood in any process of health and revitalization. 3) The process of moving toward health is more important than the program used. 4) Before a congregation or pastor can become healthy it is imperative that both understand their past and the factors that both helped and hindered their development."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135532569329664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:34.614Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:46:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8062a91b-43d3-4945-a2de-cb432d5d56c5","accessControl_ssim":["f788f82b-7d83-4ce8-85ad-664bb4d32c5e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'Deep change' or 'slow death': a practical roadguide for the highway of change, a learning manual for church boards"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:46:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:55:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d1b757ba-48fe-457a-ba30-1526e504d922"],"hasLease_ssim":["78c2e0fd-d638-45e1-98c5-b8670d971d35"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George Brown"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gilbert E David"],"publisher_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church committees","Church work--Handbooks, manuals","Church renewal"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This learning manual is written to aid pastors and other congregational leaders who sense that real, significant change is needed in the churches they serve but who feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the transformation challenge. The manual may be used profitably by a church session or governing board to explore the foundational issues of church transformation and to actively set in motion a process for such change. The manual is comprised of a series of practical learning sections that may be distributed for independent reading and then discussed in a variety of group settings by sessions or governing boards: regular meetings, retreats, devotions, and workshops. Most often this will happen at regular meetings of the session or board in the form of 'compressed learning' - i.e. intensive, 'on the run' or 'squeezed' learning that uses exercises and reading assignments that can be handed out and discussed as a group. The manual is organized as follows. The Introduction sets forth the reality facing many, perhaps even most, mainline or 'old line' congregations today -- the 'deep change or slow death dilemma.' It then introduces the manual's basic structure and educational approach. The body of the manual treats the following topics. Part one examines the relationship between leadership and congregational transformation. Part two explores issues relating to the congregation's readiness for transformation. Part three looks at the obstacles to congregational transformation and outlines an eight-stage change process, recognizing that the process of transformation is not often 'neat,' but in fact frequently 'messy.' Part four identifies principles for keeping the process of congregational transformation going once it is under way, and focuses particular attention on the things pastors and lay congregational leaders can do in cooperation with God's grace to make this happen."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135595141005312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:34.287Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:30:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"80e1985c-4574-418c-bc02-7febc01d91bc","accessControl_ssim":["50ac13bd-872d-4b01-9a67-8c950baedf9f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Embodying Bowen's family system theory and claiming my soul"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:30:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["da0ab8ba-04e8-4adb-901c-f3ce42ebe12a"],"hasLease_ssim":["1a4156d7-904c-41d9-88a2-cd112896aba3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Thomas Arthur Boogaart"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James T Gottwald"],"publisher_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bowen, Murray","System theory","Clergy--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Bowen's Family System Theory offers a comprehensive way to think about human behavior. This paper examines how one pastor embodied the theory in a way that takes into account the more inclusive transformation of the gospel. Bowen's theory helped give the pastor a framework in which to understand events in the life of the congregation. There were, however, problems with how the pastor initially utilized the theory. The goal of objectivity inherent in Bowen's Family System Theory was initially utilized by the pastor as a reason to discount the value of feelings and the pastor's own emotional process. The discounting of feelings encouraged the pastor to continue a pattern of overfunctioning. It shows how the pastor engaged in an overfunctioning/underfunctioning relationship with himself and the congregation. To counteract the pastor's tendency to overfunction, the project utilizes a theology of God's immanence as discerned in the biblical tree of life. This thesis shows how with coaching, practice, and theological reflection, the pastor was able to reconnect with his own emotional process and gain trust in God's salvation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135596750569472,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:35.822Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Blaine C Newhouse","hits":1,"label":"Blaine C Newhouse"},{"value":"Gilbert E David","hits":1,"label":"Gilbert E David"},{"value":"James T Gottwald","hits":1,"label":"James T Gottwald"},{"value":"Rodney D Veldhuizen","hits":1,"label":"Rodney D Veldhuizen"},{"value":"Scott A Rees","hits":1,"label":"Scott A Rees"},{"value":"Sharon N Arendshorst","hits":1,"label":"Sharon N Arendshorst"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Bible.
