The author used mixed research methodology to find quantitative and qualitative results from the local church that he pastored, Chinese Christian Union Church-West (CCUC-W), and four other Chicago area churches. Based on the available data, both the quantity and quality index of CCUC-W were low, and this information was a danger signal of decline. The pastor needed a new approach to guide this church to healthy growth. Through the change of evangelical ethos and attitude, the EFC has a pressing opportunity to present the gospel to an audience who believes in a system of social cohesiveness dependent upon personal virtue and self-control. For Confucius and the Confucian Chinese, society's harmony relies upon the appropriate behavior (li) of each individual within the social hierarchy. But the plan of God has been for the people to be recipients of His grace and be channels of His grace. Four factors were studies, which included: the presence of friendly American Christians, bilingual meetings, American cultural presentation, and small group Bible study fellowship with American Christians. Learning to adapt, to adjust, and striving to achieve and to survive, in America, they are American citizens but no 'Americans.' In Vietnam, they are Vietnamese but not Vietnam's citizens. This exilic experience of Vietnamese American Catholics needs to be addressed in preaching. The Hebrews' exilic experience is helpful for Vietnamese Americans to voice their felt loss. This project seeks to help preachers to re-present the catastrophe and to reconstruct the paradigms of meaning that employs both scriptural and traditional Vietnamese imagery to identify the presence of God in their cultural as well as exilic experiences, to convey a message of Christian
