The purpose is to determine if the presence of a mentoring program is beneficial and to ascertain the spiritual fitness of associate ministers.  Mentoring is one of the treatments for this problem. The hypothesis is that associate ministers are often untrained, and unprepared to ascertain their call to ministry, if they are prepared, trained and mentored they will be more effective in their call to ministry.  A quantitative research method will be used involving surveys. Sermons and a survey drafted by the researcher served as the basis for determining their fulfillment level. Employing the qualitative surveys and questionnaires, they were able to express their fulfillment levels. Consequently, the study revealed that the majority expressed fulfillment in their respective roles. The hypothesis was that associate ministers lacked mentoring and training in the area of ministry. To accomplish this goal, five instructional classes were taught on mentoring and training for associate ministers. Pre- and post-test results of the instructional classes showed that the associate ministers were untrained and improperly mentored. The study begins by laying down vital theological and biblical principles. Pertinent Christian and secular literature will be reviewed to discover what is known about the principles and practices common to all selection processes and those dynamics which would be uniquely oriented for associate pastor hiring. This thesis continues by exploring the issues of: ministerial portfolio presentation; candidate profiling; ministry marketing; assessment strategy; and the legal, ethical and financial considerations in quality hiring. A questionnaire will be utilized to survey senior pastors to discover how they approach the entire process of associate pastoral candidates.
