This project studies the factors involved in the healing process of victims of spiritual abuse as well as ideas from systems theory as to what factors contribute to an abusive, toxic church. The author uses a qualitative research approach and utilizes the tools of a questionnaire and interviews with nine victims of spiritual abuse in Southern Baptist churches. The book of consolation in Isaiah is used as a biblical base for understanding a theology of hope and healing from oppressive circumstances. One outcome of this study is a change model entitled 'The process of healing from spiritual abuse' which involves the phases of oppression, transition, and restoration. The study concludes that resiliency is the outcome of healing. Syntactical displays of several chapters in Isaiah 40-66 were included as the principle teaching aid in helping the seminar participants gain confidence in moving from the text of the English Bible to the final homiletical presentation. The motif of servanthood is explored by an exegetical study of the servant's identity and mission.  The implications of servanthood are suggested for the ministry of the church in general and to pastoral care as one particular aspect of servanthood. The author led fifteen persons in six seminars concerning hungry children in underdeveloped countries, justice and the world food crisis, peace and justice, systematic injustice and institutional violence, the impact of international banks and multinational corporations in the Third World, and the Christian's response to global hunger.  Two instruments measured the project's effectiveness: (1) the participants' assessment which indicated enthusiastic interest, and (2) the author's estimate of each person's involvement within the seminars.
