It also explores how Performance Criticism can lead to a new homiletic approach, which the author names Performance Homiletics. Through a few examples of sermons, the author articulates the nature and power of Performance Homiletics. Contemporary Christian loss of mythic, metaphorical thought patterns in favor of literal, rationalistic ways of thinking threatens the survival of the people of God and divests the Scriptures of their power to transform. The project uses secular story and biblical story in a 'sandwich' technique borrowed from the Gospel of Mark in order to restore an imaginative, metaphorical perspective to Christian consciousness so that biblical narrative can be reclaimed as story. The sermon preparation process develops a synthetic outline, propositions (exegetical, theological and homiletical) for sermon portions and message outlines. The communication strategy designs sermons to persuasively preach elements of discipleship.  The spiritual journey evaluation measures congregational change in discipleship attitudes and actions.  The post-test assesses relative effects of other variables.  The congregation demonstrated increased discipleship, though the difference was not statistically significant. The author offers it as a prototype for what is intended to become a more exhaustive product: a complete Children's Bible that works. The clergy and lay leadership of a small congregation participated in the project, which began with a consultation which sought to name and understand the issues of conflict within the congregation. This was followed by a six week Bible study.
