However, few pastors seem to regard its importance enough to put it into practice, in spite of its clear benefits. Yet, through corrective church discipline, church unity is guarded, and the congregants can grow in faith. Three research questions guided this study: (1) How do pastors understand the principle of church discipline given in Matthew 18:15-20? (2) How do pastors apply their understanding of the principle of church discipline given in Matthew 18:15-20 to their resolution of cases in need of disciplinary action? And, (3) How do pastors evaluate the effects of their application of church discipline upon their congregations? The study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors with long and diverse pastoral ministry experience. The data was analyzed using the constant comparative method. The study found that pastors' understanding of church discipline was thorough and deep, but many obstacles occurred in applying it. The study concluded that, despite people's dislike or rejection of church discipline, a deeper understanding and faithfully implementation of discipline will promote church unity and success in pastoral ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131662819524608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:51:04.132Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:54:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ba38c7e4-4fdb-48aa-9795-c7fac669eeae","accessControl_ssim":["c81ac00d-054c-45d8-ae2e-d1d262b372cf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating Discipling Cultures through the Development of Shared Metaphor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:53:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:29:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d611c7e5-8723-49b7-93c3-40f941e8f712"],"hasLease_ssim":["97a38091-418d-462e-8aca-e969d7eec5b5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Swetland"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patrick S Grabendike"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Criticism, interpretation","Bible. (2) Was the driving force behind the Great Commission resurgence biblical and effective in reversing the stagnation and decline in the baptismal number of the SBC? In researching this, no major works were found that focused on this topic of doctrine versus mission as the motivating factor of the Great Commission Resurgence. In forming a research strategy, four areas were examined. First was the need to exegete the Great Commission from Matthew 28:16-20. The Greek text was studied for linguistic syntax and structure. Additionally, Bible dictionaries and commentaries were referenced. Second, it was necessary to look at recent history dealing with ecumenical movements and their effects. Third, the Great Commission Resurgence itself was investigated beginning with Daniel Akins's 'Answering the Call to a Great Commission Resurgence' at the 2007 Building Bridges Conference and culminating with the report form the taskforce at the SBC in 2010. Finally , the years following passage of the report were examined, specifically looking at the baptismal numbers and offering theories as to why numbers have continue to decline and what might be done to correct them."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132800944963584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:09:09.534Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:13:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:42:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f76c8bd5-9873-4176-a277-fc455e03da05","accessControl_ssim":["f00d03d8-cf3e-4e34-8690-eec19d852864"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Relational Christian Education: A theology and repertoire for teaching obedience to the commands of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:13:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:12:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b9ce966f-e89c-4a6c-93a3-fd6754d00e01"],"hasLease_ssim":["492681ff-6d56-4378-ba22-3001f4c339b2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Campbell University Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce P Powers"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lawrence Cole"],"keyword_tesim":["God--Commands"],"publisher_tesim":["Campbell University Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Obedience","Theology","Bible. Such cohesion enables the preacher to avoid the danger of fragmentation. The gospel of Matthew is chosen as a test case to demonstrate how a theme-based approach to the Scriptures facilitates the identification of a book's literary structure and central ideas of the text. This approach to the biblical text reveals Matthew's theological framework. Because this framework exposes the central ideas of a book's literary structure, it aids in sermon preparation. This approach bridges the gap between exegesis and homiletics."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133067626151936,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:13:23.861Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:38:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:05:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a62b3cc4-cf35-4923-96a5-07d29221e418","accessControl_ssim":["a8ef9512-d20e-48a1-b953-6e2bc7992534"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Communicating the practical applications of premillennial theology to a congregation through a preaching series"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:38:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:57:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["24ae3a33-a46c-4deb-80e0-c192315d7aab"],"hasLease_ssim":["99680eb1-455a-4f30-835f-9edf488fb4e0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Larsen"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael Bryan Augsburger"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Christian life--Biblical teaching","Millennium (Eschatology)","Communities--Religious aspects--Christianity","Preaching--Study and teaching","Bible. Building on knowledge relative to biblical teachings, historical church discipleship, and contemporary literature on this subject, this study advocates the use of three phases of teaching to accomplish this goal. These are the study of a contemporary catechism; the development of Life Groups that incorporate Bible study, fellowship, and service; and a mentoring ministry that pairs spiritually older believers with spiritually younger believers. The findings suggest that awareness and transformation do result from intentional efforts to disciple believers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130894651621376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:51.550Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":25,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":1,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Alan G Yerke","hits":1,"label":"Alan G Yerke"},{"value":"Benjamin C Platz","hits":1,"label":"Benjamin C Platz"},{"value":"Bradford R Williamson","hits":1,"label":"Bradford R Williamson"},{"value":"Danny L Masters","hits":1,"label":"Danny L Masters"},{"value":"Eugenio Campos","hits":1,"label":"Eugenio Campos"},{"value":"Frederick H Merkes","hits":1,"label":"Frederick H Merkes"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Commissions--Biblical teaching","hits":2,"label":"Commissions--Biblical teaching"},{"value":"Church and community","hits":1,"label":"Church and community"},{"value":"Committee on Evangelism and Church","hits":1,"label":"Committee on Evangelism and Church"},{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"},{"value":"Development","hits":1,"label":"Development"},{"value":"God--Commands","hits":1,"label":"God--Commands"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Bible.
