Through the use of two case studies, one medical and one biblical, this thesis explores new ways of thinking through ethical challenges at the bedside. Drawing primarily on H. Richard Niebuhr's theological ethics, virtue ethics, and postmodern analysis, this thesis constructs a contextual, postmodern practical theology of bioethics. It proposes new ministry practices in bioethics. It calls for collaboration among bioethical methods to create a fitting response to challenging situations. The issues are 'when does life begin?', 'reproductive technology', 'facing end of life issues', and 'same sex relationships and the church.' The result of 102 pastors surveyed were tabulated using a Likert and percentage scale format. Graphs were used to demonstrate the pastors' responses in contrast with evangelical bioethical literature. This research thesis examines both biblical and Confucian teachings on four key concepts, 'human dignity,' 'suffering,' 'suicide,' and 'life after death,' pertaining to end-of-life issues. The focus of application is on patient autonomy, physician-assisted suicide, and decisions on withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment. The goal is to provide a biblical foundation to a pro-life position and to gain insight on what one needs to be aware of when making end-of-life decisions in a Chinese-Confucian context. The purpose of this study is to show that a consistent and systematic way to approach bioethical dilemmas has evolved in the last quarter century.  The study approaches the discussion of limiting medical treatment from medical, legal, and theological perspectives. Specifically, bioethical dilemmas involving persons with developmental disabilities residing in a state residential facility in California are explored.  The project portion of the study includes a handbook for use with families in considering options regarding limiting medical treatment. Bioethical literature from 1980 to 1988 was reviewed. There is a bioethical role for pastors complementing the function of healthcare providers.  Implications for pastors applying six ethical principles and nine underlying ethical foundations reveal they will benefit by making use of them. However, in the formation of a new hospital ethics committee, I observed no established role for pastors. Seven religious experiences examined by theologian John MacQuarrie are presented in bioethical situations. An accredited undergraduate course in medical ethics tests this thesis. Students are given a survey of attitudes toward issues in bioethics before and after the course. The results indicate that students show significant change in attitudes and
