A history of Lancaster Presbyterian Church is recorded and health indicators affirmed while the need for ongoing revitalization is embraced. The question is examined with respect to biblical, historical and theological implications of union with Christ. This doctrine is placed at the heart of revitalization and considered in response to manifestations of sin in postmodernism, narcissism, materialism and consumerism. The intent was that changes in them will make Advent Presbyterian's church culture more evangelistic. Participants' relationship to evangelism, experience in the class, and efforts to witness were studied within a phenomenological framework, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative results were inconclusive, due primarily to the sample size. Qualitative content analysis of participant statements and actions, however, yielded positive results. The basis of this thesis is the writer's concern with the apparent decline of Christianity and the Church in the 21st Century. Using the early evangelical Presbyterian missionaries and clergy of early nineteenth century Texas this paper discusses the ministry of Reverend Summer Bacon, the Texas Presbytery, and the First Presbyterian Church of Gatesville, Texas. The fervor and dedication to faith in God is examined through early evangelical leaders and especially the Reverend Sumner Bacon, an evangelical Presbyterian leader in early eighteenth century Texas and used to discuss ways of countering threats to our church and family culture. It is the author's contention that the denomination has within its own history and theology the very means by which such renewal may be effected. The Presbyterian controversy of the 1920s-1930s, which split the church over issues of modernism and fundamentalism, will be explored. Focus is on Edward H. Rian, who followed J. Gresham Machen out of the PCUSAS in 1936, but later returned. The reasons for his returning provide a framework for thinking about renewal in the PCUSA today. This thesis-project shows how changes were made to the session of a PC(USA) congregation to attempt to improve effectiveness, and a policy manual growing from that experience was disseminated to other church leaders for their opinions. The researcher presents a theological motivation for churches to pursue changes in the leadership structure of the session. After examining modern and postmodern paradigms, the writer asserts that accommodations to the modern paradigm do not meet the demands and expectations of ministry in a postmodern context. The writer then proposes missional values and structures to enhance the effectiveness of the local church in the postmodern context. This results in lack of a loving relationship among her members.  The above phenomenon of DPC, the lack of a loving relationship or concern for one another is reflected in the fact that small group team ministry does not thrive in DPC.  Ideally, small group ministry would flourish and would lead to spiritual growth and revitalization at DPC.  The DPC would then be able to regain the shape of a loving community.  When spiritual growth occurs that comes from team ministry centered on thriving small groups, DPC can be revitalized to become a dynamic church with motivation for missions and service. Stumbling blocks in the way of growth include ignorance of the current state of DPC and a lack of vision concerning for the future of DPC, as well as resistance to change on the part of members.  Theological, biblical, historical, and cultural bases of small group ministry are examined in this study, as well as the positive and negative aspects of identity among Korean immigrants.  The study suggests ways to bring about change.
