The qualitative study of six United Methodist churches affected by the divorce of their pastors, this study addresses the minimally researched phenomenon of how clergy divorce affects a local church and the factors that influence a local church in its recovery. The author discovered that a local churches recovery is influenced by various relationships that exist between the pastor and the local church. The research was intended to show trends and attitudes.  The study began with the premise that Southern Baptist theology and praxis holds a rigid view of divorce when applied to pastors and fails to allow for divorce for any cause other than adultery.  The research consisted of interviews, letters, questionnaires, books, articles, and tapes.  The study was limited to the preaching pastor only.  Respondents as a consensus offered little encouragement to the divorced pastor returning to the pulpit.  There was a strong indication that pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention are taking a more moderate view toward divorced persons in their congregations. Divorced clergy required to leave their parishes experience a second devastating loss, creating intense shame.  Ten clergy who remained in their parishes for three years, postdivorce, in two-hour interviews, report significant mutuality in dealing with the shame of divorce and with the loss both priest and parish suffer in clerical divorce. It ascertains general trends and attitudes, examines the central biblical, theological and psychological issues and assesses the unique factors of clergy divorce, e.g., what it is like to have marital difficulties which are adversely affecting not only family well-being and happiness but also one's ability to minister and perform pastoral care?  of tremendous concern is how the people of the church react when their pastor announces the fact of the separation and/or divorce. Will judgment override all caring and support?  who will respond and how?  what about his/her ministerial image?  the writer was amazed to learn that even though a judgmental attitude toward divorce still harbors within the Christian community, there is a growing tolerance and acceptance of it within the more liberal, mainline parishes. The final chapter offers suggestions to the local church and to church officials as to ways of helping stem the increasing tide of clergy divorce.
