part, to a failure by male preachers to fully understand the unique needs, characteristics, capacities, behaviors and sorrows of the women in their audience.  The purpose and intent of this thesis is to offer suggestions to male preachers on how they can more effectively relate the sermon to women as a segment of their audiences so that Christ may reign more successfully and intimately in their hearts. It is difficult enough for a local church pastor to create emotional connections in preaching. Those connections become more difficult if the preacher does not know the congregation, but is a judicatory official or other outsider related to the congregation through ecclesiastical structure.  Narrative sermonic design provides an effective method for making emotional connections. An 'interpretative context' is present whenever persons attempt to communicate.  Therefore, preaching is affected by the interpretative contexts of both preacher and hearer. A 'gap' may exist that can impede communication between persons whose interpretative contexts are sufficiently different.  This project examined the contextual nature of preaching.  Study of biblical texts, prior to their development in sermons, afforded pastors and congregations opportunity to become aware of contextual gaps.  A sermon review process allowed for evaluation of the gap-bridging process. The theoretical framework investigates the biblical, historical, and theological science fields, documented by the library survey approach. The technical framework includes communication theory, fundamentals of effective letter-writing, precautions, and use of blessings in letters.  A practical guide (manual), including over 20 actual pastoral epistles, merges the perceptions from the theoretical and technical rationales.  Evaluations of the manual by a panel of United Methodist clergy are reported. The author contends that by teaching one's contract for communication in preaching to the congregation, the listener will be able to perceive in advance the import of a forthcoming message.  Such teaching and preparation enables more effective listening to sermons and better equips the listener for ministry. Questionnaires, lesson plans, and statistical analyses are included which demonstrate how sermon design can be taught in order to enable listening and enhance ministry for the
