The project provides a route to a more cooperative, Christ-like, and unified evangelical interchurch community. Biblical and theological sources were used to gather data for this project. Further, this project contains information form interviews and fields notes from three case studies at three sites in northern New England. The focus group participated in a regimen of training sessions, homiletical endeavors and practicum with the aim of enabling the praxis of unity in the church and the community. With the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Bermuda half its former size, and the United Church of Canada struggling with shrinking resources, both question the value of union.  This project proposes changes which address past wounds and will enable the relationship to fulfill its original ecumenical mission of proclaiming Christ's ministry of reconciliation.  The project examines the history of the fifteen-year conflict, as experienced by persons involved, in light of ecumenical literature. Conciliar identity is to be developed in the local setting of the church.  The author researched the historical formation of the United Church of Christ and the historical development of the ecumenical movement in order to assess the relationship between the two, to demonstrate the convergences evident in their unfolding histories, and to gather sources said to be intrinsic to the development of conciliar identity at the local level.  Both the historical traditions of the United Church of Christ and the ecumenical movement provided resources for the development of an educational program intended to initiate the process of conciliar identity formation. The program was taught over a period of eight weeks, with nine participants and contributing presentations made by representatives of confessions other than those associated with the United Church of Christ.  In conclusion, the author determined the necessity for the course to be extended. He concludes local ecumenical efforts must eventually involve the theological content of national and international dialogues if local congregations are to approach the kind of unity our Lord desires. Christian unity and disunity are presented in an historical and developmental overview. Four current models of ecumenism are outlined in contrast to COCU's covenanting model.  A questionnaire was used to gauge grassroots awareness of COCU, concern for Christian unity, and openess to COCU's proposal.  Resulting data indicate a desire for Christian unity (with some latitude in its definition), little knowledge of COCU, and an audience receptive to COCU's work. A survey tool was used to measure the attitudes of persons in five different congregations in western Perry County, Pennsylvania.  The congregations which were studied were United Church of Christ (2), United Methodist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran.  The study also evaluated the data by age and gender indicators.  The overall study indicated a significant ecumenical openness in worship, fellowship, witness, and mission.
