The author states that ordination is only for those who received a divine call from God to serve publicly in the holy ministry of the word of sacraments. Today, what is commonly called an 'elder' is in reference to laymen appointed to secure the congregation in its temporal affair and to assist the pastor in the administrative tasks. In scripture the most common titles for the holy ministry are elder, overseers, and pastors. These three titles are interchangeable (Eph. 4:11; Acts 20:28-31; 1 Pet. 5:1-4). The author promotes the value of ordination for pastors. Elders are not ordained, but appointed to assist pastors with the administrative of the local congregations. In addition to the training for church eldership, it includes training for sharing the faith community's perspective in the public square. This project seeks to answer the question, 'If the church is going to participate in public dialogue in the public square, who do we send?' It is the author's view that those who the Apostle Paul describes in I Timothy 3:1-7 are the people most suited for this work. In our increasingly secular age, people of faith must be encouraged that they not only have a Biblical mandate to express their witness in the public square as Jesus calls them to be 'salt and light' in the world, but that there is also plenty of precedent in American history. This study utilized a qualitative design using interviews with elders of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.  The literature review focused on four aspects of pastoral care: strategies used by Sessions, personal involvement of elders, elements affecting elders' individual engagement, and assessment by elders of the pastoral care. This project asserts that congregationalism without a plurality of elders is unbiblical and unhealthy. It shows that over time the Southern Baptist Convention removed a plurality of elders from its congregational polity and replaced them with a democratic process. The research shows revived interest in a plurality of elders among Southern Baptists. These lay leaders are required to go through a course of education prior to assuming their office. The exact nature of that training is not made explicit in the church's constitution, so it is left to each congregation to discern a program that will prepare their ruling elders for faithful service. This mandated moment is an opportunity for positive spiritual growth. But many of the approaches to this task have relied on a heavily didactic method that focuses on transferring information, rather than a devotional method which focuses on spiritual formation. What is offered here is entitled 'Prayerful preparation: Elder education as spiritual formation.'
