The conbination of a low view of man and a high view of God was critical in both the establishment of the early church under Augustine and the the later renewal of American Puritan culture under Edwards. The high view of God is seen in the writings of both scholars, and implications of this theme are seen in Puritan culture and the writings of Jonathan Edwards. The study used an integrated approach, combining archival and survey methods. Five theoogical issues are explored as they inform partnership. They are the Trinity, the purpose of God (missio Dei), the body of Christ, the gifts of the Spirit, and the church -- both local and universal. A survey was used to have attendees of the CAR Consultation reflect on these theological issues in the context of partnership. It further encourages ministers to develop a type of 'recovery hermeneutics' in preaching. The author, calling upon her own years of experience with and research in Twelve Step spirituality, as well as the work of historians and writers in the field, traces the origins of Alcoholics Anonymous in the Oxford Group and the New Testament teachings which were formative in Twelve Step principles and practice.  She discusses the controversy over the 'God as you understand him' concept.
