The goal of this thesis project was to explore the impact of the personal discipline of physical activity as a necessity in being a good steward of the body while being faithful to fulfill one's pastoral call. The problem is that clergy, in a sedentary occupation, can become physically unhealthy by engaging in meaningful ministry but neglecting to take care of themselves as they care for others. The scope of this work looks at the Apostle Paul's claim that there is value in being both physically and spiritually healthy. This work listens in on written conversations between professional and spiritually healthy. This work listens in on the written conversations between professional authorities as they consider how physical fitness benefits the spiritual life of clergy. This thesis-project was tested by a three month project where clergy engaged in physical exercise three days a week for thirty minutes and reflected on the impact on their spiritual lives. There is, within this thesis, evidence that a physically and spiritually healthy pastor should more aptly be able to fulfill a lifetime commitment to their call."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131985930878976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:12.276Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:29:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2c878be3-27d5-41b1-8e3d-3897bdd65d79","accessControl_ssim":["4d21494f-b400-4c53-8a56-956a860d1bf2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching in pain: how chronic illness impacts the preacher's ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:29:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:25:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["654b4c08-38e4-43d0-9460-a54cf581eb8b"],"hasLease_ssim":["6f655f72-0a9d-4216-81a2-54e3167cbf11"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott M Gibson"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy K Beavis"],"keyword_tesim":["Clergy--Performance standards"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Health and hygiene","Religion","Pain","Health","Chronically ill"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Chronic pain impacts the life and ministry of countless preachers. By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, examining the Scriptures, including Paul's thorn in the flesh, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers who themselves battle chronic pain, the author identifies some common challenges and unique opportunities that those who preach in pain face as they seek to minister effectively. The preacher's call, his character and his task in ministry are discussed, concluding that when rightly understood, chronic pain is itself a gracious gift of God that He uses to form the preacher, and through the preacher, others."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130361567117312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:23.162Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:05:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"383ce174-3637-4026-8614-db55d61440cf","accessControl_ssim":["09939a1a-4d76-49fc-9bfd-7b8ac94b7735"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A project to discover the knowledge, attitudes and actions of Christian believers about various forms of healing at Faith Baptist Church, Euclid, Ohio"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:05:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:45:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bc03030a-9efe-4373-a95a-cefeae40ecd6"],"hasLease_ssim":["51474466-3b9c-42bf-a002-d29cf67c9ff7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William H Myers"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Martha Forrest"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Trust","Trust in God","Health","Attitude (Psychology)--Religious aspects","Spiritual healing","Faith Baptist Church (Euclid, Ohio)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project discovered the knowledge, attitudes and actions of Christian believers about various forms of healing at Faith Baptist Church, Euclid, Ohio. This effort increased health education, outreach, awareness, and identified support resources within the community.
