The author carried out his research using a narrative study methodology, also making use of ethnographic practices on both clergy and laity. The research concluded that a dark night of the soul starts with a perceived separation from God and leads to a reconnection with God. The project, carried out with ten residents of the Westport community, explores the relationship of God to suffering. Qualitative research methods help to understand the religious beliefs of respondents, disaster preparedness, and the effect the hurricane had on residents.
