It provides a working church-based model for equipping leaders that is informed by consideration of key theological issues, other contributions in the literature, and experience from a recent project of implementation of church-based equipping. Because most tools are produced with larger, urban/suburban, and connected churches in mind, this thesis focuses on the use of materials and approaches that are culturally appropriate for small, rural, independent church settings."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132954936737792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:11:36.392Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:54:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:06:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4159d026-8e07-4afd-a54b-55da07040b4a","accessControl_ssim":["be90541a-4651-49a3-b83c-026add63f0d7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Succession planning for charismatic founders"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:54:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:01:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5ccd7578-4343-4ab1-981a-20b0d9ad8d28"],"hasLease_ssim":["5eb4050b-41e3-4111-8b20-1b502a97703c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ecumenical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles E Clark"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barbara L King"],"publisher_tesim":["Ecumenical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Charisma (Personality trait)","Independent churches","International Truth Center (Atlanta, Ga)","Hillside Chapel (Atlanta, Ga)","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election","Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation explores the difficulties faced by charismatic founders of independent churches in naming a successor because of (1) no polity or tradition to guide the process and (2) assumptions about what charisma is and how it functions in the self-understanding of the founder and the beliefs of their followers. The researcher found that a successful leadership succession depends upon a well-planned transition. The research consisted of a case study of four small independent churches. Through grounded theory and coding of the data, the researcher identified factors that contribute to both the positives and obstacles of a good leadership succession. An examination of currents in nineteenth century American religious history and responses by African Americans reveals an intense effort at identity that is true to both the experience of being Christian and being African. The project develops the social context that gave rise to the independent African-American church, and focuses on the dissimilarities of African Americans in the areas of biblical identity and the conversion experience. The hermeneutical challenge is to recognize the ambiguity of the African-American church as a separatist institution justified in its existence in light of the pain of African-American communities. Though the independent church movement institutionalized an ambiguous relationship to the evangelical tradition, the independent churches were clear about the need for freedom. The contemporary issue is not justifying a separate institutional existence, but seeking a hermeneutic that is both Christian and is true to the African-American experience."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132201445752832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:37.807Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:10:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:36:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"321d3509-825a-4326-b6c5-51cb64419e06","accessControl_ssim":["8093c3ae-26d0-4837-a9d9-67d4faacf948"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Planning for neighborhood groups and a spin-off church at Lasalle Street Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:10:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:35:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e487fef2-9839-4eee-9abd-c91bc3071b33"],"hasLease_ssim":["2936de36-92ec-43b4-aec2-a38e90a2f389"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond J Bakke"],"year_tesim":["1983"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bruce A Otto"],"publisher_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","LaSalle Street Church (Chicago, Ill)","Independent churches","Leadership--Religious aspects","Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project consists of two parts.
