The acknowledgment of illiteracy is the first step toward the empowerment of African Americans.  The methodologies used to achieve these goals were surveys, pretests, posttests, questionnaires, and qualitative research.  There were six, ninety-minute sessions which focused on adult literacy, economic and spiritual empowerment.  At the conclusion of the six-week sessions, all the adults demonstrated an increased ability in reading competency skills. The project accomplished this by developing and conducting a fourth-grade level literacy training course on family values and beliefs.  Following an introductory chapter, Chapter 2 presents a biblical mandate, an historical precedent and a theological rationale for the project.  Chapter 3 discusses family life in eastern Kentucky over the past 250 years.  Chapter 4 discusses the project's literacy training program. The one-on-one method of teaching follows the 'Laubach Way to Reading.' Adults without reading skills are often reluctant to come forward.  However, once they do, a whole new world opens up to them and they find excitement in being able to read. The research and implementation of this program resulted in the beginning of the improvement of the literacy level of the children and adults in the Egypt Chapel Baptist Church and the neighborhood
