Findings from this study did not show that emotional expressiveness played an important role in marital satisfaction among the overseas Chinese subjects.  However, feelings of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness strongly predicted marital distress for the Chinese female subjects. Insofar as possible, the effectiveness of the divorce recovery program known as Fresh Start Australia Pty. Ltd. was evaluated. The thesis includes a study of the high rate of divorce, the social impact of the disintegration of the family and the perceived failure of the church to address this problem. The writer seeks to encourage and endorse marriage and contrast the benefits to direct and collateral damage done by divorce. Insofar as possible, the writer examined the biblical role of marriage, divorce and re-marriage throughout biblical and contemporary times. Supervised subgroups of the congregation met in homes, called 'homegroups.'  The homegroup leaders went through leadership training touching on areas such as theology for homegroups, biblical fellowship, crowd breakers, church outreach, sharing your testimony, servanthood, biblical caring, and prayer in small groups.  Another subgroup called marriage-obics was instituted for young marrieds first, and then opened to all who were married.  The strength of this ministry was in its practicality and spontaneity.  Measurement of success was made by written evaluation of the participants. The evidence was excerpted from the scriptures, from portions of formative theology, from feminist writings in the social sciences, and from three case studies in which various psychotherapuetic models were used in the counseling sessions that demonstrate the impact of the abuse of power. Twelve marriage enrichment sessions were designed and facilitated.  Through research it was discovered that the biblical goal for marriage is a growing intimacy.  It was then assumed that this goal is achieved through responsible communication. It was also assumed that responsible communication can be effectively learned through the dynamic process of experiential learning using a special form of communication known as couple dialogue. These liturgies, for use in Sunday worship, are not a funeral or wedding as such, but attend to the emotional and spiritual issues inherent in those transitions.  A brief liturgy of support for grieving families was also developed.  The group process and the liturgies: 1)enhanced people's awareness of God's presence through the grieving process and in Christian marriage;  2) deepened worshippers' sense of connectedness with each other; and 3) made people feel cared for by the Sunday morning
