Disparity exists between expectations and experiences of the laity regarding preaching.  There is discrepancy between the preachers' beliefs regarding their preaching, and how it is received. It proposes a scriptural hermeneutical method founded on John Wesley's sermon construct in using the preaching moment of the worship service to teach this 'love and demand' construct as a method to interpret Scripture.  The method was successful in teaching Wesley's preaching construct as a scriptural interpretive model.  The evaluation demonstrated that hearers in the focus group learned to identify the love and demand of God in the text. Evaluation of the model was based upon a congregational survey, a personal and a group interview with those sharing. One of the chief values of history is entertainment.  It is fascinating to learn about the people of the past.  We enjoy listening, seeing and reading about what happened in the past.  It is my hope that people who read this thesis will be captivated by the story of the lives of the early circuit riders.  History can also be the source of inspiration.  As we learn more about those who created the heritage of which we are heirs, we may be inspired to give thanks for their lives, and we may pledge to follow their example.  We know that history's real importance is that it helps us understand who we are.  It is a clue to our own identity.  By reflecting on the past, we can better understand who we are and determine who the future direction of our ministry. This thesis will be a resource in teaching students in confirmation classes and to groups in the church who need to know about their rich United Methodist Heritage. The subjects of gambling and pre-marital sex were addressed.  A control congregation heard only serious messages while a treatment congregation heard only humorous messages on these issues.  A rating scale survey, questionnaire, and focus groups measured the persuasive impact of the sermons.  The humorous sermons were found to be more persuasive. Postmodern philosophy has caused many people to pursue other avenues for meaning and direction by promoting pluralism, consumerism, and cynicism. The Short Christian Orthodoxy Scale was used to measure the impact of preaching doctrines on those who attend Central United Methodist Church, Lenoir City, Tennessee. Five persons were also interviewed to determine the effect of the sermon series. the SCO results revealed the congregation had a high orthodoxy belief system. There was a pre-questionnaire message followed by the first questionnaire on the first Sunday.  Then there were four Sundays with the four main messages, followed by a post-series message with the second questionnaire on the sixth Sunday.  The participants showed a moderately strong recognition of what prophetic preaching is on both the questionnaires, with a slight increase in recognition over the course of the sermon
