Chapter 2 examines the biblical and theological issues. A biblical word study, historical development of laity and clergy classes, and Paul's tentmaking as a missionary strategy is explored. Chapter 3 investigates lay and bivocational leaders in America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and their effectiveness. Chapter 4 presents historical data demonstrating the evangelistic effectiveness of bivocational leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention. Using a four-level strategic plan which includes the sharing, recruiting, and training of church members by the formal and practical methods, the author presents the biblical, theological, historical, socio-cultural, religious and political backgrounds with special discussion on ancestor worship and the Three-Self church in addition to personal field experiences with both long- and short-term tentmakers. The method used includes observation-participation with formal and informal interviews.
