Five capacities of play, befriending one's body, engaging the inner child, expressing feeling, developing spontaneity, and opening perceptive innocence, are investigated. Play is how we begin the discovery of our world, and in this thesis the author seeks to better understand how this wonderful gift can apply to preaching. In these pages, the author outlines the theory of play put forward by the British psychoanalyst D. W. Winnicott and explains how his theories are impacting homiletics. The author's contention is that it is through play that the preacher not only gains a better grasp of the biblical text, but the preacher also gains a deeper more soul-searching experience into the realm of the Holy. The implication for pastors is a renewed freedom that expresses itself through powerfully transforming sermons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128635188445184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:56.759Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:40:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:20:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"200c7f49-ba00-4069-ac44-6ae41bc75815","accessControl_ssim":["bd24ffdd-fa10-4ab4-9b84-beb407afc6af"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creativity, fun, and play: God's gifts for the ministry of the local congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:40:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:04:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["59b37b2f-0c8c-4736-a4d3-64ce8a5ddf23"],"hasLease_ssim":["716fc1d8-df50-4766-a314-4b5dca3daf07"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Walter T Davis"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Tom Plaizier"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral theology","Play","Creative ability"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project challenges Christians to take a step of faith, to risk the way of Jesus, and to dare to play, to be creative, and to have fun. Since that time, there has been little or no thought given to the subject. This project seeks to explore the relationship between theology and play while addressing the question: Why does the church seem so reluctant to play? An overview of play theology is presented including the thought of Huizinga, Moltmann, Keen, Berryman, and Johnston. A discussion of psychological play theory is included considering the work of Freud, Piaget, Sutton-Smith, and Winnicott. This overview shows both common points of understanding as well as important distinctions in play theory. A new perspective of play is offered that focuses on the idea of God as the initiator of play as an act of grace and on human play as an appropriate response to that grace. This new perspective presupposes a theology of love and freedom rather than fear and control. The many contributions of Glenn Bannerman are examined. As a practitioner rather than theorist, Bannerman embodies the new perspective of play in his methods and actions. These methods and actions are offered as a model of play at its best."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia
