congregations who are looking for ministers. The denomination has a very effective search system, but with fewer churches available, simple logic suggests that finding a new church is potentially difficult. The catalyst for this research was the author's spiritual and emotional struggles that were prominent during the search process. In an effort to care for pastors and their families in the midst of this wilderness like journey, nine pastors were interviewed in order to paint a proper picture of the PC(USA) search experience. This paper starts with an identification of common factors for church growth, then specifically exposits systematic changes that can be implemented in PCUSA churches to create a healthier culture. The hypotheses of this paper describe three areas of potential change to grow healthier medium-sized PCUSA churches: the size of the local church leadership board, the implementation of policy governance practices, and the introduction of transformational leadership training in the local church. It is the author's contention that the denomination has within its own history and theology the very means by which such renewal may be effected. The Presbyterian controversy of the 1920s-1930s, which split the church over issues of modernism and fundamentalism, will be explored. Focus is on Edward H. Rian, who followed J. Gresham Machen out of the PCUSAS in 1936, but later returned. The reasons for his returning provide a framework for thinking about renewal in the PCUSA today. This thesis-project shows how changes were made to the session of a PC(USA) congregation to attempt to improve effectiveness, and a policy manual growing from that experience was disseminated to other church leaders for their opinions. The researcher presents a theological motivation for churches to pursue changes in the leadership structure of the session. After examining modern and postmodern paradigms, the writer asserts that accommodations to the modern paradigm do not meet the demands and expectations of ministry in a postmodern context. The writer then proposes missional values and structures to enhance the effectiveness of the local church in the postmodern context. The paper considers the functions of Christian liturgy and the history of Christian attitudes toward science, then describes the development of a liturgy including the Lord's Supper, and its test use within seven congregations of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Pre- and post-service questionnaires completed by worshippers seemed to indicate that some had experienced a shaping of their understanding of the relationship between science and the Christian faith through use of the
