The case study will focus on St. Paul's Community Church (Chicora, PA), and the disconnect between the church's missional focus vis-à-vis its representative denomination.  Using a narrative methodology, there will be a comparison of the experience of St. Paul's Community Church with St. Paul's Congregational Church (Rural Valley, PA), both of which have a shared historic affiliation with the United Church of Christ and ethnic, geographic, and sociological similarities. Together with a look at the local church's ecclesiological context, a biblical view of the Spirit's creative work in individual lives, and a historical view of conflict in St. Paul's Community Church, there will be a description of the forces that created an outcome that could only be created by the people and pastor working in a way that fit the context. To explore the role of denominations and discipleship, this thesis analyzes the relationship between traditional and contemporary forms of discipleship and denominational vitality. Specifically, it examines the role of the Advent Christian denomination in the lives of a group of worshippers at Northside Community Church. Using adult learning theory and social constructivism, this study reveals how one group of believers has constructed their organizational identities within the Advent Christian denomination and how relationships with other disciples who proclaim to follow Jesus Christ impact their system of beliefs. A study of the literature revealed that this had not been done to date.  The conclusion was that a wide chasm separates the two systems.  It is pointed out that further dialogue between Christianity and other religions may bridge this gap.  Helpful features common to both belief systems are explored. A theoretical chapter argues that religious experiences are unique and qualitatively different from natural experiences without, on the opposite extreme, becoming irrelevant magical supernatural events.  Research, by test and interview, explored the relationship between religious experience and service.  Results: People from mainline churches claimed religious experiences that associate with natural reality and extend service that is humanistic and personal in orientation.
