The project consisted of intentional education, research and analysis of the intersections of evangelism, Family Systems Theory, Reformed theology, cultural exegesis, and Christian missiology, and used these understandings to explore and analyze growing Presbyterian (PCUSA) congregations in the American West. The project included three main phases: research, strategy development, and presentation. Phase one researched demographics of Theodore, Alabama and numerous books on church planting, church revitalization, and church health. The project director also attended three workshops on church planting. An annotated bibliography was used to design a curriculum for phase two. Phase two selected a group of church leaders from First Baptist Church of Theodore who met for five sessions to study the best practices of church planting and develop a church plant strategy for FBCT. Phase three completed the project as the church plant strategy team designed a strategy and a written narrative before presenting the proposal to the deacon body of FBCT. The project director formed a strategy planning team made up of church staff and other key leaders and lay people from the church body. He conducted an analysis of ten years of membership data to determine trends in growth and retention, followed by research of existing new member assimilation strategies. Using this information, the project director, with input from the strategy planning team, developed a new member assimilation strategy for First Baptist Church Colbert Heights. The thesis of this project is that strategic planning competencies enable leaders to help churches become the missional agencies God desires. Identifying church core values, mission, and vision are the first steps of strategic planning and are necessary to pursue God's preferred future. The project director conducted extensive research through lending libraries and online. Research resulted in a curriculum used to equip selected church leaders. He selected and trained a strategy development team to aid in the process of developing a strategy. The project uses semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and participatory group observation to collect data on change in clergy participants' leadership of missional growth before and after implementation of skills derived from the practice of midwifery.  The data collected measures change in discernment ability and effectiveness in advancing mission. The author offers an analysis of church membership decline which is linked to congregational over-dependence on the proclamation model of evangelism, and the failure to engage in relationship-based growth strategies. The results of this study suggest that through emphasizing the practice and importance of God's love as defined in the Great Commandment, church members can express an increased desire to invest in reaching the community as commanded by Christ in the Great
