Evangelical churches have neglected spiritual formation in favor of a devotional life that is narrow in scope and practice, leaving them strong in evangelism and discipleship and weak in spiritual nurture. Commonly, preachers are taught to preach, but seldom are hearers equipped for their role.  Employing the language of personality and temperament types as a vehicle for discussion, a strategy is suggested which brings preacher and hearers together in a small group format, enabling each to enhance their skills in hearing the Word of God by listening to one another. The study provides a biblical, theological, and historical foundation for stewardship, psychological temperament, and the relationship of the two.  The responses of seventy-eight individuals from three different congregations to a forty-question survey were analyzed. It is rooted in temperament.  People listen depending upon whether or not the preacher is proclaiming the Word in a way that has integrity to their way of thinking.  Using the Meyers-Briggs understanding of temperaments, preachers are challenged to take seriously the different ways people have of hearing sermons.  Data from one Lutheran congregation, practical suggestions and a sermon for people of all temperaments are included.
