To gain an understanding of substance dependence treatment and how this issue has become widespread, the project director researched and provided current statistics on substance dependence. Educational and substance abuse professionals were enlisted to review materials utilized in the development of the workshop. The project director also utilized scripture to validate and support the treatment approach. The project director assisted Christian lay counselors in conceptualizing the nature and character of substance dependence. The project director enabled Christian lay counselors to provide substance dependence treatment by combining a faith-based and twelve-step model. The report began with a survey of psychological, sociological, and theological insights into male depression.  The support group consisted of eight weekly sessions with homework assignments drawn from CR material, Hart's book, and daily devotionals. The key conclusion of the project was that depressed Christian men can be aided significantly through an integrated, Bible-based support group. The Internalized Shame Scale measured a statistically significant reduction of shame levels, but the Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3 did not.  The Sexuality Survey did not measure a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of sexually addictive behavior. The basic idea is that baptism represents a paradigm shift from culture to the Kingdom of God. Addiction is a paradigm -- a world-forming power. Recovery is a paradigm shift also.  There are many similarities between the Kingdom of God and recovery paradigms.  The method is researched from a Wesleyan quadrilateral approach. Christian education can be an aide to the integration of recovering people into the life of the church, allowing them to explore new dimensions of the spiritual life before fully committing to particular forms of expressing those
