The case study will focus on St. Paul's Community Church (Chicora, PA), and the disconnect between the church's missional focus vis-à-vis its representative denomination. Using a narrative methodology, there will be a comparison of the experience of St. Paul's Community Church with St. Paul's Congregational Church (Rural Valley, PA), both of which have a shared historic affiliation with the United Church of Christ and ethnic, geographic, and sociological similarities. Together with a look at the local church's ecclesiological context, a biblical view of the Spirit's creative work in individual lives, and a historical view of conflict in St. Paul's Community Church, there will be a description of the forces that created an outcome that could only be created by the people and pastor working in a way that fit the context. St. Paul's Community Church became a federated church, and the pastor operated as an agent of collaborative and redemptive change within that context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130988670091264,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:21.213Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:57:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:18:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5cb387c9-4e8b-497a-bc41-39853a8df2f2","accessControl_ssim":["a2208649-0d43-45c0-81bf-b2eb01049e41"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["My home is over Jordan: fulfilling covenant with mainline young adults"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:57:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:51:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1f89fe4e-1e89-4684-9fd6-8266c8b906dc"],"hasLease_ssim":["5f01002c-efbb-44a0-b0c3-d40f1cdda9c4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David A Roozen"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Peter W Allen"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Secularization","Church work with youth","Education","United Church of Christ"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["How might mainline churches strengthen ties with their post-high school eighteen to twenty-nine year-olds and call them to fulfill their covenant with Christ and their home congregations? After the departure of their long-term pastor, South Church faced internal, communal, and cultural transitions. This project used narrative tools to reconnect the congregation to their biblical, communal and personal faith stories. The three tools were 1) a Lenten-Eastertide sermon series; 2) remembering the church's history using their 250th anniversary banners; and 3) an Appreciative Inquiry process. Using these narrative tools South Church successfully adopted a new way of seeing, hearing, thinking, and speaking in narrative form during a pastor transition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719795170476032,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:55:45.382Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:44:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:24:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"265f4ebc-d3b7-4a36-a4ff-c4a61571c31f","accessControl_ssim":["9719d67c-ca84-4388-9376-699bfb73eff5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Corrective discipline as a part of continuing discipleship: using church discipline to restore significance to membership in the United Church of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:44:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:15:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7570fa0d-8053-4a6a-ba38-5ca4c23a5eb2"],"hasLease_ssim":["e911e05f-67ed-4830-b63f-1a05f2dab3d4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA)"],"advisor_tesim":["Pamela Baker Powell"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joel Carey Kletzing"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry"],"subject_tesim":["Discipline","Church discipline","United Church of Christ","Church membership","Christian life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study is concerned to determine whether holding church members accountable to vows of commitment through community discipline can restore meaning to membership in unhealthy congregations. Conciliar identity is to be developed in the local setting of the church. The author researched the historical formation of the United Church of Christ and the historical development of the ecumenical movement in order to assess the relationship between the two, to demonstrate the convergences evident in their unfolding histories, and to gather sources said to be intrinsic to the development of conciliar identity at the local level. Both the historical traditions of the United Church of Christ and the ecumenical movement provided resources for the development of an educational program intended to initiate the process of conciliar identity formation. The program was taught over a period of eight weeks, with nine participants and contributing presentations made by representatives of confessions other than those associated with the United Church of Christ. In conclusion, the author determined the necessity for the course to be extended. While participants could define the essential characteristics of conciliar identity with limited effectiveness, there was evident promise of further enrichment of that identity, together with associated practices."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Pittsburgh
